Well I have been doing alot of research around here and spent many hours (this really is a sickness...no really it is) searching opinions and pics on the subject and I feel I have narrowed it down for what I have to spend and what I want to do. My two finalists for a 4" sua are Skyjacker and Hellcreek.

Skyjacker:
I can get it on ebay with paypal
$757 shipped with no shocks (about 900 with)
I have had good luck with skyjacker in the past

Hellcreek:
I can get it on ebay with paypal
$720 shipped with shocks

This would be a done deal and I would have already given my money to hellcreek but I have read alot about the lean that has resulted from installing their kit. Now I'm sure not everyone has had this issue with hellcreek but enough to sound my alarm. So which should I get? Also any other systems that fall into the sub 1k category with shocks? Please if you vote for "other", the lift you are referring to must be under 1k with shocks shipped to CT.

Thanks

Andy

Hell Creek...

they support the Southern Cruiser Crawl every year without hesitation.

If it helps any, my Skyjackers lean to the drivers side. They have been on the truck for 8 years and I love them but Tom with Hell Creek has been good to us. If I had to do it now it would be the Hell Creek kit. We have installed at least 4 of his 4" kits for 40's and have had great luck. Your money though. Good luck.

Later,

When I was spring under, I tried several different 4 inch springs, including the Skyjackers which are way too soft. My favorite was the Alcans that I got custom.

If I were to start over, I'd go spring over right away for a wheeling truck. Seriously, there are lots of pros and cons, but a spring over truck works better off the road. On the road it's a toss up.

$880 for just the springs without shocks and before shipping. I don't doubt that they are great springs but I am trying to go cheaper with this build.

What are you going for here? Off-road only? On and Off? Where do you spend most of your time? What kind of Off roading? mudding? desert? rock? sand? all of the above? High speed or low speed?

That is why I like Alcan. Sure they are pricey, but you will get the perfect spring that you are looking for simply by telling them what you are looking for.

Price is the name of the game. I need cheap. I know about the benefits of soa but I dont do any wheeling that would require a soa. Sure it would be nice but I dont need to go bigger than 35's and I have a winch and lockers so no worries. I have been wheeling an 89 4runner with a few mods and have yet to find a place out here that I couldnt go so I think a soa would be overkill.
I do plenty of street driving with it and for off-road use it would see rocky trails and the occasional mud bog.

Thanks for all the input guys. I am leaning towards hell creek right now.

Have you looked at Man-a-fre's Safari Suspension? There basic 4" "kit" (part SSS-404B) which is springs with bushings and shocks is listed at $545. If price is your main concern not a bad option. Their prices go up from there depending on shock and shackle choices. Thought this might help. Good luck, Alan.

I have a set of Alcan springs on my 1974 FJ40. I LOVE them.
Here are a few pics of what my cruiser look like befor the rebuild. I have a set of custom long springs (5" lift kit) and a front shackle reversal. I am running 35" BFG Mud T/A's

I have a new 4" smokey mtn kit with shocks, I am not going to use them because i am going to use a ome kit. I will take $400 for springs and shocks.

Don't forget Downey. I have 'em, and love 'em.

Only experience i have on 40s is with skyjacker (which i loved and would do again), rancho (no f'n way in hell, they were on a rig when i bought it) on my rigs and a friend runs downeys (not impressed, sorry, since both sets went completely flat within days, might have something to do with the cantilever shackles and the second set was used, but i'm not sure)

i had one of the first sets of skyjackers in the early 90s. rode great. "dad", who was tinkering with 40s most of his life, going back to the late 60s, said he thought they rode better than stock. i've heard complaints about longevity, but at cruise moab in 2005, i ran into a guy that is still running my old springs.

now, there shocks are another story. i broke two of them...both of them, the lower mounting eye snapped off.

I am running 4" Skyjackers, which is what the PO and I put on it about 7 years ago. It has been a very bumpy ride for the last few years since I owned it, but all was well after I added weight - the hard top - which smoothed it out quite nicely.

If you plan on driving it with a hard top, the springs will break in a lot faster than they would without it: I was about to give up on the springs until I put the top back on.
