Hello everyone, new guy here. My Dad owns a 2 year old stihl chainsaw and has had to have service a couple or times on the oiler. Oil resevoir plug fell out and had to be replaced, later fell out again and was replaced with a grub screw. Now the oiler seems to be oiling too much. Oil runs out the bottem of the saw after running awhile and it gets everywhere, big mess. It seems to be getting to the chain as the chain gets oil. He has flipped the bar several times and seems to act the same. Oil holes on bar are open before bar is installed. He can only put in about 3/4 tank of fuel or will out out of bar oil while cutting. Never had this problem before, gettin too much oil.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

same issue

Mine does the same thing. Oil fill plug does not line up correctly so it will not latch shut once you remove it. Also, leaks a ton from the bottom. I'm sure Stihl would repair if I take it back, but I have just been making due. Let me know if you get any answers. Good luck.

Sounds like you oil filler cap was forced on there and not clocked properly. Go to the dealer and spend $5.xx to buy a new cap.

I have not had any problems with old or new style oil or fuel caps.

I'm not sure if its the cap. Most of the oil and dirt seems to be collecting on the opposite side of the cap, on the bar side. We are doing some cutting today and I will keep a close eye on it. Could a bad cap seal cause too much oil to fllow to the bar?
Thanks for the help.

Joe

The oil cap has nothing to do with the oil flow of the pump.

STIHL make more than one model. Do you have the model number of your saw? Many of the Pro series have adjustable oil pumps. Depending on the model, you may need to adjust the oiler back down to a flow that works for your bar lenght.

is this real saw bar oil?

it is a model number ms 390 and he only uses real saw bar oil

My buddy Dave must have been hung over the days those saws were made.

How long are you letting it sit while iddling?
