Thank you very much for doing this.

I have a 029 i need to do some preventative service on.

Wire Problem

Can you post a picture(s) of how to wire the ignition module. I failed to take a picture when I was disassembling my MS 310 and now I am not 100% sure where all the wires should go. I already got the service manual for the 310 but it was too vague. Any help is appreciated.

The secondary ground wire goes on before the flywheel.

Hi, I'm glad I found this thread, because I'm repairing my old 029 Stihl. Thanks for your detailed guide D'Animal. It explained many things to me.

Like I said I've got an old 029 saw and the cylinder and piston are scratched, so I have to change them.
Could you advice me if it's possible to install a cylinder and piston from 039 (MS 390) to my 029? Will it fit without any modifications? Will 029 crankshaft hold out 039 piston and cylinder?

But 039 cylinder has 49mm diameter and 029 only 46mm.
And one more thing. What if I'd buy 039 cylinder with decompression valve (there is no such a valve in m sow)? Do I have to make a hole in top orange plastic cover? In general is it worth to do so?

Finally I ordered an original cylinder and piston in one of Stihl dealers. I've got them already. The cylinder looks OK. It has Stihl label (however without Mahle label as it is on the old one), but the piston is a bit strange. There is no Stihl label. Instead of this there is 'K' inside 'S' label on it (I attached photos). Could you share your opinion on this? Are my suspicions that this piston can be not original part are valid?

Hi D'Animal,
I am just finishing up a complete strip down and rebuild of my Stihl 029 and your postings have been a tremendous help to me in the process.

However, I was just about to re-fit the rear hand guard section (connecting the Carb to the cylinder), when I noticed that the top of the piston does not go down past the Carb intake hole when I turn it by hand!

What have I done wrong or is this normal?? I haven't a clue. Would be very grateful for your advice.

Thank you.

OK, the flywheel is not hitting the ignition module. The flywheel rotates fully with ease, and the piston seems to be moving up and down freely and is not hindered in its movement. However, when I watch the piston move up and down through the Carb intake, I never see the top of it, only the side.
I'm guessing the piston should go low enough to take the fuel air mix into the chamber. Therefore, it would have to at least go down to the lower edge of the inlet port?? Wouldn't it??
I have not yet tried to start it, should I??

Thanks again.

This might be a dumb question, but to store it for a while they recommend cleaning the fuel tank..

How do you clean the fuel tank? Do you dump the old, splash fresh gas (not mixed) swirl and dump again?

Not sure to what extent they are taking about.

Thanks

You can just run the saw out of fuel.

If you flush the tank, you will run the risk of the fuel filter absorbing fuel and eventually turning to varnish.

Great, thanks for your advice Dan!

I know this is an old thread but just out of curiosity, but is there such thing as a HO oil pump for the 290 or is there another pump with a higher output that is compatible with the 290?

I've been reading that the 290 has a ratio of 1 tank of fuel to 1/2 tank of bar oil. I want to either install a better pump with a higher output or mod the control bolt so I can get a result of 1:1 tank of fuel to oil. I haven't found anything on the assemble diagram of the oil pump.
