I have two old Stihl 009L chainsaws. The housing on the oldest is damaged but worked when I put it on the shelf. The other lost compression and needs a rebuild. I have always liked the 009L for it's size and power. What I want to do is rebuild these two saws into a working. I figured out how to take it apart, but unfortunately in doing so the bearings fell out of place. Searching around the Internet I found this site and a thread on rebuilding an 009L that warns about the bearings falling out. What I'm wondering is how can I get them back in? I'm also wondering what parts I should replace when putting back together. Neither piston looks scored, but I've never seen one before either. I'm pretty handy and want to give this a try as long as expenses don't end up costing more than buying a used one on Ebay. I have other saws including an MS250. So, I'm not doing without. I've attached a picture I got from a thread posted by D'Animal that shows my problem with the bearings.

You should email D'Animal . I bet there is no one on earth that knows more about Stihl than Dan Hull. He has ton of Stihl repair posts on mud. Also he works for Stihl, I thinks if he gets a cut he bleeds Stihl orange. Good Luck

Thanks, I actually found a thread he had posted in the past when searching for how to get the bearings back in. I did not realize there was a tool to keep them in place. I have emailed him and received a reply. My day job and upcoming holidays may keep me out of my garage for awhile. If folks are getting the prices they are asking for 009L parts on EBay I might be better off parting out the two saws and buying a new one. But, I'm a tinkerer and have never really gotten in to small engine repair before. I thought with nothing to lose I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks for the reply.

I've been thinking seriously about getting a real chainsaw. Had poulan(junk) and old mccologh(maybe)I have great respect for Stihls used by most tree pros. What do you think of the In-Tree saws they have? (Have ~ 3 acres and it would be used mainly for trimming and firewood for the smoker).

Rebuild your 009L's and you will never want to sell them. Lol

I would measure the ring end gap. If it is over .017 replace them.
