I dont remember the person who posted the link to the toyota website and suggested that folks go their with the VIN number of their prospective cruiser and pull the service records, but you saved me at least $2000 on a car last night.

I was down to 2 cars. both 2004, one with 112,000 miles the other with 127,000 miles. Both are from used car dealers. The 112k told me the car had not had timing chain done. He also told me the rear entertainment didnt work but otherwise the car was fine. Good tires new brakes. This car is at a upscale used car dealer, 300 miles away.
The 127k car...the guy didnt know anything about the car. And he sounded like a used car salesman. He was like " we get the cars in from dealers, if they dont sell in a week, we take them to the auction" He said the car had been online for a week. Well that smelled like a lie cause I have the auto trader app and it is set to alert me whenever a new cruiser is added and I called as soon as I saw it and he claimed it was going to auction the next day. It did go to auction , it didnt sell. My mechanic is catching the train to it nab it tuesday.

But here is the thing. I set up my account on Toyota.com inputed both VIN numbers and boy did that tell the story. The 127k had been serviced every 5000 miles like clock work. 36 service records. The 112k car had about 7 service records. Had not had it's chained replaced. About 5 of the records stated electrical problems. :crybaby:

That toyota.com service record look up is a savior.

Not necessarily. I would venture that nearly all of the LC's here on MUD have zero service data on record since the MUD member purchased it and they're probably the most overly maintained vehicles in the fleet. Even if it the record shows a 3k OCI, that really doesn't tell you anything about how it was used and what other problems it may/may not have. It's always better to buy from a private party. Going to check out the vehicle is more about checking out the owners than the vehicle. And yes, non-branded dealers don't even exist in my world.

The one nice thing about the site, it will let you manually input the service records yourself even if it isnt worked on at a dealer. Which is nice....

My 90k mile service was done at SLEE. Most normal wear and tear service I do myself and keep and log of everything. Not in the Toyota database, but I am confident it's maintained above average. Just like most other vehicles here on MUD.

However, there is a very low percentage of owners on here who've owned their 100's since spanking new, so the Toyota site does give you a little background.

True, but they're only visible to the person who enters them. If you buy used, only dealer services will appear on the site, even if prior owner entered everything.

just had the same problem few months ago.replaced the starter but still the same, mechanic can't figure it out.I tried replacing the starter relay and until now super smooth. so if you're planning to put a new starter try first to put a new relay.it might work, so you don't have to replace the starter yet. just a suggestion.

I was the one that suggested that because I've used it several times when looking at new LCs. Unfortunately the only service records for mine are ones I've done. No PO service records.

I input my own maintenance records into the Toyota Owners site, not so others can look it up, but to keep an online record that you can print off for prospective buyers.

I'd agree with others that it's not useful if it's been serviced at a 3rd party shop. But A lot of us are searching for the perfectly dealer maintained mall cruiser to save. In which case it is pretty useful. It's also nice for double checking when dealers claim the 90k service has been performed.
