Steering wheel vibration at 60+ MPH

Hi folks,

I have a 2004 GX470. I'm experiencing steering wheel vibration at over 60mph. It subsides after 70mph or so. I have new wheels and just had my tires balanced. This is a new issue and I *think* it might have started after having to slam on my brakes. Any pointers as to what to check out first? My mechanics know their s*** and they said everything looks okay. I'm in the middle of NYC so they didn't test drive it on the highway and said they'll do that next time. Any tips would be appreciated as it drives me a little crazy on long drives. Thanks.

New wheels are most likely the culprit.

Which wheels, and which lug nuts are you running? Hubcentric rings?

Fifteen52 Turbomac HD. Not sure on the lug nuts but I think my mechanics ended up using corvette lug nuts. No clue on the hubcentric rings! I'm pretty new to all of this. Thanks for the help.

Toyota and Lexus SUVs are hubcentric, those wheels are supposed to also be hubcentric...

If they were other wheels that didn't match the center bore you'd need extended shank lug nuts and hubcentric rings. In your case the lug nuts may help though, especially if the wheel shifted after your hard brake event.

Heck, it could be worth just retorquing the lug nuts or swapping wheels front/rear to test what happens.

Swapping wheels around is always a good diagnostic step. And make sure you torque the lugs to spec with a decent torque wrench.
