On the 75 series the steering box comes apart relatively easily.
The issue I have is getting enough seals ( 04445-60040) in the pack to actually do the job intended.
Out of the pack , only about 4 actually fit. There’s not even a rubber end shaft seal !
The ptfe seals supplied are too big as are the other seals. I even ordered some separately.

So, question is where can one source the correct fitting seals, particularly the ptfe , as shown in the pic.
There are 3, two large @ 50mm od, and one smaller about 32mm od. The 34.5 mm seal , from the steering box goes inside the adjacent O ring, within part of the box body…..I cannot purchase this either.
It appears that all the other suppliers are issuing the same seal packet as I’ve received.
The box is original to the vehicle.

Part numbers check out, Partsouq say it’s for the box, even cross reference the VIN number……….clearly not.
Any one shed light on it please?

Hello,

There might be a rebuild kit still available out there. It is possible that the PartSouq box you found is one of these kits.

It is better to order the 79 Series box and replace the whole part.

I'm not a whole lot of help here, but I can tell you that the Terrain Tamer kit of 04445-60070TT doesn't have all of the seals you need either.

It also has a faulty unusable steel spacer washer that you will have to discard, and the main power piston Teflon seal and/or o-ring are slightly too big and will be damaged when you attempt to reassemble, resulting in you having to reuse your old one.

Terrain Tamer have 3 different options for seal kits, but they can't tell you what seals are included in any of them.

They can tell you that the most expensive kit has a sleeve in case the shaft is worn, and when you ask them what the big black cup thing is in the photo, they tell you it's for installing the sleeve. But it's obviously not.

I'm pretty disappointed actually.

You're asking us to diagnose why your steering seals don't fit, but you don't tell us what model you have.

75 Series had different steering boxes through time. From 1990 onwards (so HZJ75, FZJ75, PZJ75 and later FJ75s) your kit number is correct. Pre-1990 (so HJ75, BJ75, some FJ75s) the correct kit is -60030.

If you have bought the correct kit for your model then it would seem that your steering box is not original. Look for a number cast into the housing, and post some pictures of the box from various angles so members here might be able to identify it.

That worm gear looks identical to my BJ60s, which has the same internals as a pre-1990 70 Series. However the 1990+ gear might look very similar, I am not familiar with them.

I guess people buy from Terrain Tamer to save time or maybe money, but IMO there is no reason not to buy the correct genuine kit from Toyota, especially if TT can't explain what is in their kits.

I'm well prepared to believe that aftermarket junk is the wrong size, but there is a knack to fitting that teflon ring onto the power piston. If you slam it straight in, the housing will guillotine it every time. You need to very slowly wind the rear housing on with a bolt while tucking the teflon ring into its land as the piston enters the bore of the housing. First time I tried just pushing the thing in, with a genuine kit, I ended up with the above. Luckily the rings are very cheap individually from Toyota.

Yep, that’s my fault ….however in the meantime I’ve been doing some delving.
It turns out that some of the early 1990 75 series hzj75 Ute 4.2 , used the earlier 62 model remnants or what’s left over stock steering box’s .
The seals pt no. 04445-60030 (not the 04445-60040) are slightly smaller , etc so having now ordered those earlier model seals they fit beautifully……

I have to add that because this is an import from Australia, it states that manufacturers date
is 1-1-1990. I find that more of a generic date than actual. Who works New Year’s Day on any year to register a vehicle.

Good that you got the right seals. The part catalogue does not show this use of HJ75 steering boxes on 1990 HZJ75s, is this known among the AUstralian 70 Series community, or a conculsion you've arrived at yourself?

In my experience the Toyota catalogue does not have major oversights like this, and Toyota are not British Leyland, cobbling cars together with whatever is sitting in factory part bins.

Are you sure your bulkhead identifty plate states 'HZJ75-xxx....' and not 'HJ75-xxx...'?

I think you're confusing manufacture and registration. The vehicle was manufactured in Japan and registered in Australia, so that's not going to happen on the same day. But I agree, it would seem to be a generic date for 1990. If the vehicle was first registered in Australia in Jan 1990 then its build date would be in 1989 or earlier, making it an HJ75. If the build date is Jan 1990 then it should be an HZJ75.

The plate has got HZJ75RP. . At least the chassis stamp matches the vin plate.

Save time.
Save money.
Sometimes to get parts that are actually better than genuine Toyota.

But one big reason, is because Terrain Tamer make a lot of "kits" which make ordering parts so much simpler. In my experience, Toyota are not so interested in making kits, they are more interested in making life difficult by selling individual parts. For example, transmission overhaul kits, front steering knuckle overhaul kits, diff overhaul kits, clutch kits, etc.

So thinking they would make a steering box kit, wouldn't have been an instant thought for me. However, I now know that Toyota do make a steering box seal kit, which is probably more complete than the Terrain Tamer one, which is great to know.

Can you suggest any other kits that Toyota make for any other parts of a HZJ75, that I wouldn't have thought of?
