Got a lot of oil up front. Front main seal is going to be replaced for sure, but I've also read some talk about the "timing cover leak" as well. I'm just wondering if I'm confusing myself and the front main seal is also called a timing cover seal? Looked up the exploded view of the timing assembly and didnt see anything gasket-wise that would be replaced.

gasket below that is highlighted is ''gasket front end plate'' 11312-56040 but unsure if this should be replaced while I'm in there.

Ah i see 11328 now. I need to get my eyes checked.

Beno, is the timing cover gasket prone to leaking? Might have to crawl under there again to see if its just the front main or the timing cover as well.

@FJBen had issues with leaks from a new front timing cover gasket.

It's a big job to replace that paper gasket as it will be welded to the old aluminium covers. It would be very laborious to do a clean job with the rear cover in place.

So I would clean down the front of the engine and be certain the old gasket is leaking before going in.

@Tanner H good luck 😊 that job is a pain.

Some tips:
If you get lucky, the timing gear on the injection pump will stay on, it’s pretty doubtful though. Which means you will have to time the engine by taking off the idler gear and rotating engine to align all timing marks. Pretty well documented in the FSM.

When putting the timing cover on, you don’t have to do a heated water bath to fit it on, you can use a heat gun to heat the area where the timing gear goes to slide it back on.

Speaking of timing cover gasket, 11328, searched all over and reached out to stedman at japan4x4 and that part is NLA

I found an aftermarket piece in Australia at Brett’s truck parts

Order 2. In fact I’ll take another 😊 so order 3 or more and I’ll send you some money.

I would absolutely smear some FIPG on both sides of the gasket, A to hold it in place and B so help seal any imperfections you might get when cleaning that old gasket off.

Only buy a Toyota front crank seal, easily found online, cruiser outfitters etc.

If it’s leaking at the one that’s touching the block, then it’s more involved by far as you have to remove cam and everything attached to that back aluminum timing case.
