My power steering box is leaking oil and I was wondering if its worth buying a kit as replacement boxes are really expensive. Has anyone fitted one of these kits, is it an easy job and does it require any special tools?

not really any special tool ( in my special tool definition tho ) but it is tricky to make it right .. the sector shaft seal was huge pita .. I mean huge .. I end soak it in warm / hot water to make it more easily to manipulate .. and still was PITA ..

Sometimes tht nut on the pitman arm can be really TIGHT!!

I think the sector shaft can be had for $250? Im not sure where I got that figure,I think I was quoted it when I thought I needed it ,but didnt in the end

OK, trip to a mechanic required for an assessment. :)

Here you go, I'll degrease it on the weekend and take some more pictures.

Its the later box. When you degrease it be gentle, dont put lots of water prssure on the seal areas or you will be pulling it out. It looks to be leaking from the top ajusting nut. That can be fixed without removil.

Cool, is it as simple as tightening everything up or is there a gasket or ring that needs replacing?

I cleaned it up and it looks like it's coming through the screw at the top. Maybe the side too, any pointers?

Hi - ive got a similar problem. Seems the input shaft is puking out fluid (Under the shaft cover). Ive found a thread on rebuilding these and looks like some of it can be a bastard and even when you pull apart it may not just be the seals that need replacing. Sourced a second hand one for $400 but not sure how good and been quoted $750 for fully reconditioned one. Thoughts on rebuilding/replacing with second hand or reconditioned?

If you really think it is the seal under the nut on the top then you just need to remove the nut and pry off the the seal and install a new one. Just don't let the slotted shaft move much, if any, if you can. The big shaft that goes out the bottom is a little trickier to deal with, especially removing it if you leave it in the truck, but can be done if you remove enough parts around it. The shaft can get worn and not seal. My problem with my 85 was that the seals had superseded numbers and the seals were no were near the right size, so I took some measurements and found a matching seal at a seal shop. It still leaked probably because of the wear on the shaft so I doubled up the seals and so far no leak.

It looks to be the input from the steering column. Will I need to remove the whole part (box) and completely strip down to replace these seals? Could be better off throwing in a second hand one from a wreckers that isnt leaking?

That one is also doable, it’s just a little tricky because of how far you have to take apart. It is best to look at a manual and understand how it comes apart and then back together. Actually, I can’t remember if you can just remove that one with out removing all the other parts. Remove the shaft, then unscrew the end piece, might be a little tricky to get it loose. Might need a puller or pry bar of some kind.

A lot of them have very high klms and the sector shaft can be nearly worn out. I would fix yours if its in a MWB, they've often had better lives than 75 series utes and troopies..
