Almost immediately upon switching, I started getting the startup rattle on the 93. Now that it's been a couple thousand miles I can post it. Not only on cold startup, either. I have been using the smaller Mr. T 20004 filter and 0-40 Mobil 1 and this change I slapped a larger Toyota filter on it with the Rotella. So the filter could be a contributor, as some have noted here on Mud. The oil pressure has not changed.

The 97 has never done the rattle and has not changed. The oil pressure seems to be up at least a needle width, particularly at hot idle when this engine gets a needle width from zero on the guage. Now it's 2 needle widths above zero.

So, in the ever fickle real world, one engine loves it, the other's undecided....

I've never had the rattle on my 97. At hot idle it does read low on the guage-approximately 3 needle widths with Mobil 1 0w-40. For whatever reason, all of the 97s I've ever seen read shockingly low at hot idle. I prefer the readings in my 60 which are always at the upper third bar and never varies except when off.

In the summer, I run the Mobil1 15w-50 and the hot idle is significantly higher, and reaches the upper operating limit earlier in the rpm range. I would prefer either a real guage with numbers or an idiot light. That will be a project for another day.

doug, how long is the rattle when starting up?

Doug I am disappointed...someone of your mechanic caliber, changing two variables at once resulting in being unable to directly point to the cause of your rattle issue. Changing to the larger filter this time, still with Mobil 1, THEN on the next change switching to Rotella would have isolated the results, therefore allowing you to isolate the variable that directed caused the rattle to develop.

I use the large-yota filter and Rotella 5W-40 Syn with some slight rattle on cold start ups. Mobil 1 rattled worse and I had consumption issues.

Operator error:)

how loud is this rattle and what exactly does it sound like? I can't hear a thing on mine...

edit: I'm running Delo 15W40 and the 20004 filter.

actually once, only once, I heard some fairly loud noise like a metal coffee can with a marble in it tumbling down a slope. That'd be it? Was all set to investigate, but never happened again...

Yeah.
I THINK I can hear "startup rattle" on my '93 for about half a second, but then again I'm not sure what startup rattle sounds like.

This post is useless without audio :) .

I had the startup chain rattle with Rotella syn 5W-40 and a large Pure 1 filter, changed to Mobil One 15W-50 and a small Toyota filter and it was cured. Try changing to the small filter? Both of my brothers run Rotella syn 5W-40 and small filters with no issues.

That's it.

I get it pretty consistently on cold start up. I've never tried the smaller filter and am guilty of letting the dealership change the oil so I'm using regular old Mr. T labeled oil. They do put in a full 8 qts. I'd love to try things with the smaller filter.

With the unobtanium 20004 I was under the imression there was no smaller OEM filter available, no?

Doug-- had the same rattle with the Toyota filters. I eliminated my rattle by going with the napa 1515 gold--this filter is made by Wix.

Doug

99% it's the filter.

Funny though, my rattle is worse with the Napa Gold 1515 than with the Motorcraft FL-400S or FL-300 (as opposed to SR. Gringo's experience).

Now someone else can post and tell us how they cured their rattle by changing oils and keeping the same filter :D :grinpimp: :D

Were you using the large Toyota filter, or the small?

I hear they will be available to "smart shoppers" in the near future ;)

15-40 Rotella Napa Gold and no rattle. 111,000 miles.

TX,

Agree - bummed I did not grab a 20004 from the stack sitting next to the biggies. My bad.

Guess I better make sure the thermal and motion detectors are on in my garage, and be sure the auto activated chain gun's pneumatic pivot points are lubed. Hmm, better feed the Dobermans as well......

Large Filters--by the time I purchased my 80 the small ones couldn't be found.

Ok, I figured probably large.

I find that the Delo 15w40 makes no rattle in either rig regardless of filter....
FWIW

My rig rattles with all filters, including 20004 and big ass.
