Alright, I'm putting the motor back together on my 60. I have fuel, I have decent compression, and I have spark. The motor is @ TDC ( had BDC as it popped through the carb). The rotor is pointing @ #1. The vacuum lines have been replaced with Toyota stuff. Right now there is no exhaust past the manifold. (I wouldn't think the lack of back pressure would keep the motor from at least trying to start)

Turns over just fine but all I get is popping out the exhaust. Not even stumbling trying to start.

I tried a tooth forward and a tooth back on the dizzy but still nothing.

Any thoughts?

Stumped. It sure sounds like the timing isn't happy. However, the open exhaust combined with funky timing could be bad. The back pressure may actually be necessary to make the engine mellow out. I don't know if burnt exhaust valves from open exhaust is a myth but...

I just had my carb crap out, causing radical backfire/stalling. I never pinpointed the cause, but a quick rebuild solved it.

Sorry, not much help.

I've been spending some serious thinking time on this one. My carb is freshly rebuilt by JimC so that shouldn't be it. My thought is in the timing arena but I can't pinpoint the reason. Even with virtually no back pressure, the motor should at least stumble trying to start but all mine will do is turn over.

By "popping" do you mean compression, or actual firing?

Starter fluid can be your friend. It will actually prove you have the timing and spark.

Before my carb rebuild, my accelerator pump was shot. I could literally crank the motor for 5 min w/ no start, nada. A tiny shot of starter fluid in the top of the carb and it fired up and ran on the 1st crank.

pretty much the fuel loading up and just igniting out the exhaust.

The motor will just sit and crank, no change like it's trying to start.

Methinks timing/ignition.
