If the problem was just that the clutch was not engaging then the truck would try to jump forward. Has to be something else like a gear mismatch between the starter and the flywheel gear ring.

when i mean the clutch is not engaging, i mean that the engine and gear box have no connection. ie, if i put it in gear and push the car, i can, when normally, if i put it in gear and push i shouldnt be able to

Ok, in that case it should crank with no problem.

unless something is stopping the solenoid from traveling to its full extent and closing the contacts. im thinking the something is the flywheel.

I could be wrong but I think that the fj40 starter has a bendix drive on the starter gear. So the gear is independent of the solenoid-all mechanical.

12ht engine with a reduction gear starter...

ok, sorry for delay on pics, was only able to work on the 45 last night.

here is the bolt where you connect the battery link. also shows where you connect signal wire from ignition.

next is the bolt from where the braided cable goes into the starter motor.

next pic shows the contact points inside

and finally the solenoid bolt (not sure what its actually called) with the copper contact to close the bolt contacts. it also pushes the bendex out the other end of the starter

Can you take a pic of the connector that attaches to the ignition? I need to know what that style is for another project I'm working on.

If the Bendix moves freely, and when you activate the solenoid it on the bench the Bendix fully extends, then something about how it's bolted up is not correct or the flywheel teeth are maybe buggered up preventing the Bendix from fully engaging.

ok, will get pics in the morning.

i thought as much. the front of the bendex is a bit worn. you think filing it a bit would help the engagement? when i rocked the flywheel a bit i was able to get the starter to fire, but if you leave it and try again same problem. so i think the bendex is being stopped by the flywheel, but only just

Interesting, that is the same male connector as is used on a fusible link for the 72 to 82 FJ40. The one in your pic is broken.

I sell those if you want to replace it. Part #FLLC $4.95 and includes one new male terminal.

Cool. Deliver to Zimbabwe? ;)

Hmmmm missed your location! If your willing to pay the shipping costs I'm sure I can find a way to get it there!

No worries bud ;) have some new connectors on order that should come in the new year
