killed the cruiser coming into my apartment complex, now it won't start. The starter won't engage the flywheel, it just pops out and hits it, but won't turn it. does it just need a jump, or should I just go get a new starter and solenoid?

I had the same issue here and it required a replacement. Getting the starter out is tricky if you have the same conversion I do. Once the starter assembly is loose you need to move it under the engine mount, over the axle, turn sideways between steering linkage and radiator and it will drop out there.

I didn't have enough space to drop the starter between the framerail and engine.

And by the way... GO RED RAIDERS!!!

Just moved back to Austin area from Lubbock about 2 years ago.

The o'reillys on 50th was always the most knowledgeable parts store I found... and if you ever need a mechanic, 'the' service guy from Gene Messer is now at the Lexus dealer on 19th. Replaced the engine in my wife's 4runner and did a lot of work on our FJ80 at very reasonable prices. Ask for Kyle and tell him Lindsay said you had to bring him snickerdoodle cookies. (he should get a kick out of that) He almost bought my '89 runner and is a Toyota guy.

Also, I called the Toyota dealers in Austin looking for factory parts to pick up and ended up going back to Gene Messer and having them ship me the parts. Talked to Tim Beasley there and he was very helpful, parts arrived yesterday. I'll probably go to CDAN for future but I was in a hurry and had worked with them before.

Sorry about the irrelevant info hijack and long post.

Check your battery voltage? It should be around 12.6V. If it is good, then make sure your starter cable is not corroded and has a good connection.

My battery voltage was a little low, but a jump didn't help it out any, the starter that is, and all of the cables are just a few months old.

I have gone through several starters, so I can switch them out pretty easily, just wanted to see what you guys had to say, I'm going to switch out the starter and my remote solenoid tomorrow, its raining right now, plus I don't have a ride to go get the parts.

Where are you buying your starters? Why are they going out so fast? Might be worth buying a rebuilt toyota one. I think they still have them..

Goodluck

I think this is a SBC 350. Still if you're going through starters like that, somethin' fishy here.

I have only bought 1, but they are the rebuilt ones from Oreilly's, so they have a lifetime warranty, I think I am on my 3 or 4th, and a rebuilt toyota one will not fit on my small block. my headers tend to cook the solenoids.

turned out it was a problem with the starter, got a new one and all is well.

I thought that I had killed it again though. Got it started and moved it to its usual parking spot, turned it off, then tried to turn it back on, and nothing again. Got underneith and soon realized that I my headers had burned through the main cable and it was grounding out through the headers and block. Got it off the header and taped up, so now it starts like a champ.
