I recently picked up this 2014 Starcraft Comet 12RT pop up camper toy hauler. This is my first camper trailer so I have no idea what I am doing. Due to the rugged nature of this pup I figured I will record my maintenance, mods and uses of it here.

The first order to business was going to Colorado to inspect then bring this trailer home. I stopped by St. Elmo prior to picking up the trailer, because no trip to the Rockies is complete without a little bit of dirt.

I then made my way to the seller up an incredibly steep road where we talked vehicles, trips and future plans. A deal was made and I drug my new pup down the mountain.

The lights worked, the brakes worked, the wheel bearings stayed cool and by some miracle the rotted out mud tires from 2013 held together on the 600 mile drive home.

There sure is a lot more room with this pup than my homemade RTT trailer. Now I get to learn about RV systems. What have I gotten myself into!?!?!

nice pick up. I ran a large pop up for a few years and overall liked it. Inspect the raising/lowering mechanism and grease up as needed. Also check any wood for rot etc. And make sure the seams are all clean and sealed.

The winch motor seems to really strain when raising the top. The cables are definitely coated in crud. I noticed the cable splitter under the trailer had a grease fitting on it. I suspect that whole contraption should be cleaned out and regreased. The seams on the outside of the trailer definitely need cleaned and resealed.

One thing that bothered me was the lack of a 12volt disconnect switch. I discovered the 12v converter and the CO/propane detector are continuous draws when not plugged into shore power. So I bought a bigger battery box and installed a Blue Sea disconnect and a Victron shunt to monitor the 12volt battery whenever boondocking.

I would look into cable lube used in the rigging industry to lubricate the cables after they are clean.
