The lettering was painted a maroon color and the bezel was an off white. I know there are posts with what the original bezel color (The color code) not sure I have seen one for the color of the letters. I will go and take good picture of mine and post it in a few. It is original.

Does anyone know what the name of the lettering graphics are on it? Were they only painted white or did any have the lettering painted a different color in order to see it better?

You are looking for the name of the FONT for the lettering....

Good luck with that.

I am sure it is just some Japanese worker was told to make a stamp with those letters, cannot picture them in the late 50's when it was likely made knowing what a font was.

found this:
the toyota font is a funny beast. being a graphic artist and having recreated the font for foxfabs vin plates I found it easier to just make my own letters in a vector based drawing program. the same way I did the Teq stickers for Landpimp. Toyota pretty much breaks all the type and font rules when using the font by stretchig it where they want to. So it is hard to design one font for every toyota lettring project. while they all look alike they can be very different.

if i were at a sign shop near you i would take a digital picture of your tail gate making sure I was far enought away so none of the letters were distorted. if that did not work I would take a pic of each letter individually. next i would get the height and width of each letter. import each letter image into a vector based program such as Corel draw or illustrator. then recreate them ( trace them) being sure to not just make them rectangles but give them curves in the corners they don't have to be noticeable but this will one make the letter a bit sturdier when applied and two more importantly the eye does not like harsh corners. next I would send the new vector file letters to a plotter to cut out on vynil. I would consider using the reflective sign vynil (white) instead of just plain white. that way you get alittle bling factor with out being obnoxious.

I worked in a sign shop for year awhile back so this really should be an easy task for someone to do. our shop is due in any day now a rolland printe/plooter which would be able to do it. but it will be a month or more before it gets up and running.
