Many many months ago, when I was still employed as a HTPRS, JTU contacted me about bringing his 40 over for a three hour tour of the carport. AFI install, rear disc brakes, a weekend or three on the side, in & out.

Like the SS Minnow, the 40’s plans for a quick trip (and my own plans as a HTPRS) took a different turn...

This beautiful ‘69 has been in his family since it was a year old. It only has 13,xxx miles on it. Supposedly only about 10,000 on the engine.
The truck itself is solid. Zero rust anywhere. Under the hood, though, the shear age and years of barely being driven had taken its toll. It lived on a farm, and while it wasn’t treated like a tractor, it wasn’t used frequently enough to keep everything in working order.

Somewhere in the mix, I decided to quit my job so I could go overlanding car camping with my friends. Shortly after I put in my notice, I had a second customer lined up for a decent sized project (LS swap).
It soon became clear that my carport gender-identified as a garage. So before I could start any of the cool truck projects, I would need to perform the necessary surgical modifications to accommodate the garage conversion.
But before any truck projects or garage surgery, we still needed to go to New Mexico in search of extraterrestrials.

The garage conversion eventually gets underway, and man, my cubicle-conditioned body was not prepared for the physical abuse of manual labor. WTF was I thinking?

I had a very short window to get the opening prepped for the garage door guys or else I would have to wait a month. So I hustled to at least get that done for them.
I had some settling on the back corners from poor drainage and no gutters, but it hasn’t moved in the ten years we’ve been there. Getting it fixed properly with pressure grouting would take time & money that didn’t exist, so instead I just jacked up and rebuilt the back side.

ETAF was getting impatient, so he summoned JTU. The garage wasn’t through yet, but surely it wouldn’t take long. The basic shape was forming quickly.

At one point, I was going to go pick up the 40 and drive it the 100 miles back to Memphis. Surely it would make it. Anything can drive 100 miles.
The night before I was to head down, JTU says it won’t crank. We punt while he can figure it out. This gives me more construction time, so I don’t complain.
He ends up wrangling a trailer and hauls it to me. I’m still not ready, but surely it’ll only take a few more days of construction.

As with any project, the demo and major parts move quickly, but the details take the longest. And they did.
Luckily for me, JTU is patient. I would be a while before the garage was ready to accept its first victim.
I wanted to keep the soul of the carport intact, so I left the brick in place and recycled the wood panels from the ceiling for the walls.
I still had a lot of organizing and storage problems to work through, but it was getting close.

This attracted the attention of my next customer, who brought his truck down to join the party. JTU’s was just going to take a week or two (maybe three since a few things were added to the scope), now that I can devote a solid part-time job to it (full time job is a stay-at-home mom), so it made perfect sense at the time.

This is pretty funny in hindsight. The day after he dropped it off, I start it so I can move it around the driveway, and as soon as I give it gas, the throttle cable broke. There will be no pre-work test drive.

It ran fine when I drove it off the trailer. You must have some bad luck for it to break right away on you.
