Squealing Rear Main Crank Seal

Thanks, but I just bolted it in so it's just a few bolts (not all 1 piece). I am more upset that I did not put the rear main in. Must of had a few beers that day...:beer:
 
Well, I tried to lubricate the seal externally and the squeal persisted. I removed the trans/transfercase/clutch/flywheel and was able to grease the rear main seal in place without removing the seal, the oil pan, or the crank bearing cap. I greased the seal by carefully peeling back the outer lip with a small flat screwdriver and injected grease between the seal lips using a small dualco style grease gun. I injected grease into thr seal around the entire perimeter and the noise is gone. I ran the truck up to operating temp with only the flywheel installed to verify that the noise was gone before I reinstalled the clutch/trans/transfercase.

Lesson learned, grease the dual lip seals prior to install.
A wipe of motor oil was not enough in my case.
 
Now that we're almost 3 years into the fix, is the sound still around? Also, how did you find the Toyota OEM seal? My mechanic is having a rough time fixing with the after market. I thought it best to admit I'm not doing the work myself...
 
OurTownCDA, I think you are getting your dates mixed up. This problem and this thread are from Summer 2017. Removing the flywheel and squirting grease into the center of the seal did in fact fix the squeal 100%. It has not made a sound since I fixed it.

As for the source of the OEM rear main seal, any toyota dealer can get it. Its the same part from the 1960s to the early 1990s as far as I know.
Its also available from online sources. Its about 60$.
