I am looking at 80 series, 1996 with 98,000 here in the UK. It is the automatic with the. The current owner has spray painted the undercarriage. The cruisers here in the UK are mostly rust buckets. I am looking for a weekend cruiser and would consider a 100 series.. The other 100 series I looked at had wax oil rustproofing on the under carriage. With the 80 series, I couldn’t see rust in other areas of the truck. It was pretty clean. I thought I could see some suspect areas. The 100 series was imported form Japan previously and looked mint. Not sure if I should pass on the 80 and go with the 100.

thats a tought one - it's put on so thick that its hard to tell. If it had been stripped down, cleaned and then painted it would be great but most likely it was just painted over the nastiness. i would pass without pictures of what it looked like before

If the paint looks new then you have to conclude that it was done to coverup something no so good. Why would someone go through the expense of painting for their own benefit when he planned to sell.

If you like the rest of the truck then get a screwdriver and poke around on the frame. I would be more worried about body and bolt rust. IF they are all good then the frame is most likely fine. It looks to have quite a bit of surface rust on all the underneath but i don't know what the normal is for the UK. That would no issue in chicago but would be a big !!! in the southwest.

Common practice for dealers to paint those areas to make them look cleaner on older used cars.

my guess is its pretty rusty, the p/s cooler looks pretty crusty and its hard to tell from the other pics but theres spots on the frame that look like it was a cover up job

Prep is everything. That's a fast and dirty paint job, I wouldn't trust it. It might be them just trying to dress it up or its deep rust. In a perfect world you would be able to tap it with a hammer but I doubt they would be ok with you doing that on a sales floor. Also 80 series is best series.

All thanks for the advice and awesome feedback. I had that sinking suspicion with that vehicle. Everything else looked good. I will keep looking or just import one from Japan. Who knows. Here are some photos from two other LCs in the area. The first 3 are from a 100 series in the area, the last 2 are from another 80 series. All of these vehicles he less than 120,000 miles. again thanks for the comments.
