:confused:I was wondering if I should repaint the 77-fj40 as it was so badly faded, I tried to see if the oxidation could be removed without a ton of work, I used straight Spray Nine and a cloth and it came up better than I thought it would, no where near the original red, but for a spray and wipe it looks lots better. easier than a rattle can paint job. :) see the sample on the hood picture.

it will fade right back to the original.... still better than rattle can.. if you are not going to do it right then just keep buffing it... unless it is just a trail rig and you dont care.... but I assume you would not have asked then.

Like you said, better than a respray...but will be only temporary. I did the same thing on my old beetle's orange paint and about 6mos. to a year later...back to sherbet orange.

hey instead of paying more than twice as much for paint and body than I did for the whole truck or chance messing it up even more with a spray can job...I figure I'll just wash it twice a year with Spray Nine..it's only 10 bucks a jug! and use the paint money to buy more parts. Don't get me wrong if I had the $$$$ I would love to have a nice shiny frame off resto FJ. But for now it's rust, faded paint, and smokin' exhaust. but at least I finally have one !! Thanks for the input.

oxidation

yes a buffer and some rubbing and polishing compound followed with a good wax

Blue gelcoat renewal - WOW!!!!! - Moderated Discussion Areas

heres a link to some oxidation removal on boats--its the same

I remember a buddy told me to get the cleaner wax additive from Sears you add a few drops to the wax you are using, that stuff was magic in a little plastic tube

I had a blue truck and the hood looked white and it fixed it right up it also pulled grease stains and discoloration out of the paint

that was a long time ago though dont know if they still make it
but from just looking at the hood your paint looks like it has promise

Rattle can wont look as good as the original if you can get it back in shape

Buffer with some compound and then to some less abrasive stuff. It will be temp though but ?? You have answered your own question so ?? Ditch the rag though and you will be satisfied with the results. I should clarify I am not advising you to buff it with compound everytime just this once

EDIT - Bsmith123 beat me to it!
