My 1998 Land Cruiser, 100 series has all time 4 wheel drive and auto locking hubs. I was sitting at a light, hit the gas, heard a pop then just a buzzing sound in either drive or reverse. The vehicle would not move. Shifting to low range auto enagages a feature which locks all 4 wheels together and this makes the vehicle move normally (normal for low range). Beginning to take things apart to diagnose, the front drive shaft turns freely with all 4 wheels on the ground, spinning the passengers side drive shaft, but not the drivers side shaft. With both front wheels off the ground, spinning the drivers side wheel also spins the front drive shaft. Spinning the passengers side front wheel does not spin the corresponding front axle, does not spin the other front wheel or the front drive shaft.

Seems like a problem in the front passengers side hub or axle.
The transfer case is not able to drive the back wheels when in high range. Would this be normal if a front hub or axle is broken?

Thanks.

I removed the dust cover from the hub body and I see that the axle on the passenger's side front wheel is spinning inside the hub body. The C clip was still in place. I removed the C clip and removed the nuts and cone washers from the hub body, the hub body is loose and will spin on the shaft, but no amount of piddling with it seems to make it want to slide off the shaft. Is this an indication that it is stripped inside or that the shaft itself is stripped? I wonder if I need to resort to extremes to get it off? (Remember, this is an all time all wheel drive model)

I think my main question is about the health of the transfer case. If the front drive shaft spins without spinning the front wheels (because of the problem with the passengers side front hub) - Is it normal or is it a problem that the transfer case would not drive the rear wheels? Keep in mind that this occurs in high range and when the 4 wheel interlock feature is not engaged.
