Howdy all!

I'm having trouble with my speedometer. Like... it doesn't work.

I pulled the cluster out of the dash, and found that the cable wasn't spinning.
So, I took it over to my mechanic, and he said the gear was stripped, and he supposedly replaced it.
He said it was working, but strangely. It would only work when you hit about 20 mph, and then it would pop up from 0 to 20.
I have yet to see it even do that. So, I pulled the cluster out of the dash and found that the cable is still not spinning.

My question. If he replaced the "speed-o gear", and it's still not working (i.e. cable not spinning), what other gear would I have to replace?
And would I have to pull the entire t-case out to do it?

Any ideas?
Thanks!

at the speedometer what do you have? screw in type? square end? what year? according to SOR phone call there are several different sizes of gears at the t/case too. If your mechanic didn't know that ( I didn't) I wonder if he matched what you had or got one that was close. If it's close it might not be close enough.

Peruse THIS THREAD <---- this is a link

You will find pictures of the rear output housing of the transfer case where the speedometer driven gear (plastic) and driven gear housing are located, and how they are retained.

Drain the gear oil from the transfer case. Not doing so will create a mess for you when you pry the driven gear housing out of the rear output housing, as gear oil will run out of that opening.

Look at the teeth on that plastic gear. If they are chewed up/missing, you will need to replace that driven gear.

You will probably also want to remove the parking brake assembly and then remove the rear output housing of the transfer case so that you can get to the speedometer drive gear that is on the output shaft of the transfer case and verify the numbers on the side of the gear so that you can get the correct driven gear installed.

Thanks Poser!

I knew there must be a thread, but I couldn't find it.

The big thing I was worried about was if I would have to pull the transfer case out to work on this issue. I think I found what I was looking for in the tread.

Thanks again

Storm,
Just so you know, I have a '73-40. On the dash end, it's a clip on. On the trans case, its a screw in.

I think I have all the info I need in the thread Poser posted.

Thanks
