We are nearing completion of a vortec/nv4500/orionHD swap into my 87 fj60. since the orion HD has no provision for a mechanical speedometer cable, I need to switch to a digital speedometer. I'm wondering if anyone has installed a different speedometer into the original location? Haven't pulled the gauge cluster out yet, but it looks like the cover works like a trim piece, and the gauges are mounted to a base plate?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Mount up a GPS unit and call it a day.

Thanks. Good advice if that was the best solution for this particular vehicle. There is a need for a permanent gauge mounted somewhere. replacing the original would look the best compared to other options.

Once I started using a GPS I fell in love with it. It's really accurate (more accurate than the stock speedo) and doesn't care what size tires you run and it is easy to read. I never hooked up the fancy AutoMeter speedo in my FJ40 - just use the GPS.

Why not get a conversion to run the factory speedo? Check soem hotrod stuff I am almost certain it is out there.

If you don't have provision for a mechanical spedo cable with the Orion, where were you supposed to install the sender for an electronic spedo????? We have a 4 pulse VSS that would operate most elec. spedos, and it is made for the Toyota 22mm mounting with Toyota drive tangs, but it still needs a place to go?????
