I had a clicking/fluttering noise coming from behind my instrument cluster. In my FJ62

Pulled the speedo cable and replaced it with an OEM part, noise was still there.
Spoke to a buddy who is a Toyota Master Diagnostic Tech and he recommended using SILICONE GREASE on the speedometer itself. I put a descent sized blob of the grease on my thumb and jammed it into the back of the speedo where the speedo cable enters the speedo assembly.
Noise gone, quiet as a mouse.
This grease can be found in the plumbing section of any hardware/home improvement center.

Did this help smooth the movement of the speedo needle as well? Mine does not make much noise but it bounces a lot.

Unlikely that the speedo grease will fix that.
I had a jumpy needle but that was fixed with a new speedo cable/cable housing. The PO had hacked up the housing during an engine rebuild.
You might just try pulling your existing cable (leaving the housing alone) from the transmission (there is a thread out there on that) and lubing the cable. That’ll likely solve your jumping issue. It’s a 10 minute job.

Get an OEM Cable. I purchased an aftermarket one from Cruiser Corp and the needle started bouncing 2 months after I installed it.
