We are in the market to purchase a used 100 series. More than likely we will end up buying one with 100 - 175k miles on it.

I'll of course check all the normal things you would when buying a used truck, but my question to you guys (in this 100 series section of the forum) is what are the common and specific quirks of the 100 series to pay special attention to?

I'm open to any advice...thanks! If you happen to know of a good truck in the SE area (we are in NC) for sale let me know, but I'm sure if they show up on this forum's radar they get snatched up pretty quick.

Thanks!

Do the AHC check- difference in graduations on the AHC fluid reservoir from low setting to high setting. do a search to find out the specifics.

and check all the CV and steering rack boots for splits. especially close to the clamps. the boots may look perfect, but they may be torn at the clamp and you won't know unless you tug at them to reveal it.

and i would pick up a cheap obdII bluetooth dongle and the torque app for android. scan the ECU for any pending fault codes. probably worth the few bucks and extra hassle just so you know what the ECU is saying.

I'm not 100%, but I don't think the specific trucks I'm looking at have the AHC option. Let me know if I'm missing something, but this only applies if the truck has the "switch" on the dash/gear shift area (as shown in the image). Correct?

It was funny, when I first read your post I thought you meant "Low" and "High" settings of transfer case so I think my mind went down the wrong path. If I don't see this switch, safe to assume this is not an option on the truck and no need to worry about it correct?

Yes, that's the switch for AHC. It's on the console to the left of the gear shift lever. If you don't already know, AHC came on all LX470's and was an option on '06-'07 LC's. IMHO, the sweet spot is '03-'05 LC which gives you the modern interior, 5sp tranny, 18" wheels, but no AHC.

well good because I'm seeking 2003 and glad I don't have to worry about AHC

AHC is awesome.

Check if windshield was replaced and for any visible rust bubbles around that General area

I'm a noob around here so forgive me if I don't see the big deal about buying a 100 with AHC. I'm really enjoying the AHC function on my new to me 2005 LX. If it gives me trouble down the road, I'll replace it with OEM LC springs and shocks or install a lift. For now, I'll continue to enjoy the AHC and replace the fluid as needed. I would imagine a 2003 without AHC may also require some suspension work if still riding on 13yo original springs and shocks.

I think it is just matter of personal opinion / wants.

For me, I just don't need the AHC and is just something else that will break on the truck and then have to deal with. I agree that a truck from 2003 on old suspension is going to need work as well which I'm cool with. I just prefer not to have the option for my purposes and like a more simple and straightforward design.

2003 is the last year of the tranny dipstick so drain and fill is as simple as an oil change so you're on the right track! But rear view cam didn't start until '04 :(
