I've had a brief search but not found anything online. Are there special tools for the nut on the compressor end of the turbine shaft, and the splined turbine end of the shaft?

The compressor end has a round splined nut (LH thread). I think it is a 20-point spline:

The turbine end of the shaft has what I think is a 14 mm 10-point spline to hold the shaft when torquing the nut on the compressor wheel:

How have people gone about working with these fittings?

Just use anything to remove the old compressor nut. When you order the ct26 rebuild kit from Turbo Rebuild UK it'll come with a new compressor nut which from memory is a 8mm 12 point socket. The torque setting for the nut isn't very much so you can just hold the turbine wheel by hand with a rag if you don't have a socket that fits that end. Sometimes the turbine nut has been ground away lots and you can't use socket anyways.
