spare tire woes

Guys -

I remember reading somewhere that on the 100, Toyota changed the chain-type tire winch mechanism to one using a steel cable. And with the new design, lots of spares were being lost from under the vehicle (I think this was primarily in Oz). Does anyone know if an older chain-type tire winch can be mounted up in place of the new cable one?

Just change the steel cable to a higher strength cable. OR, and I have not looked at it so bear that in mind, make an adaptation with chain on your existing set up. I would go for the cable exchange though if that is possible.
