Seems the piston on my spare tire swing out wasn't quite up to the task of controlling the weight since it snapped off after the door swung out and that was on level ground. Anyone have any experience with a more heavy duty piston i could add to control the weight, speed and travel of tire swing out? Here's what i have now that busted.

You need a stopper on the swing... the piston and ram are not meant to stop the movement... only control movement between close and open stopper. This piston should be bit longer that the swing range to not bottom out before the stopper.

Thanks for the advice. Can you give me an example of what one looks like? My swing out will open Past 90% to like 120 or something so I can see where the weight on it would snap the piston without something else to control it.

Here is a pic..... I welded a piece of 1"x .5" on the frame. This is what the swing arm contacts to stop.

I have a steel wedge that stops mine against the quarter panel plate. Stoppers are needed indeed!

I've got the figure out something for sure before installing the new piston and quickly breaking it. Was thinking of trying to rig up some sort of steel cable maybe so I can remove it when I do want to open the door further

would be easier to weld a wedge onto the bottom of the arm that hits the metal on the bumper at the desired position.
