There are two BJ73s that I have been informed about coming in from Spain and it seems almost all the bj73s I have seen have the passenger side top rear lights blacked out: like in this photo. http://www.jdmlandcruisers.com/wp-c...987-bj73-diesel-land-cruiser-for-sale-2-s.jpg

I've been looking on and off for days and the only information I could find has to do with European standards: one reverse light and one fog light, but that doesn't explain why the top lights are blacked out. Any thoughts on this would be hugely appreciated...and if need be, would it be somewhat of an easy fix to swap in regular rear lights, or is the wiring going to be completely different? They are both 24v.

Cheers.

Troopies from aus came with these during some periods. I have seen en for sale too.
Crusher's troopy build has these on them.
Why? Because some spec cruisers came with lights in the bumper to do the job.

Thanks for the info...what I don't understand is why the one side has it and the other does not...and always on the right side. If it wasn't needed wouldn't they both be blacked out?

Edit. None of this really actually matters if it isn't going to be a problem driving it around North America. Just wanted to check if there would be issues here because of that.

Its to do with the tyre being on one side and being able to see brake/indicator lights from all angles.
In some countries they only require one light to be placed on the bumper,in australia they require both to be on the bumper if you have a rear mounted spare(after a certain year).

The lights and bumper in the pic you provided are off a 90s models HZJ7* and are the same as my 1995 troopy.(I actually have the ARB set up but new it would have been the same)

Which engines do they have. Most BJ73 have the toyota 3B ,but some have the less desirable Italian made engine(it might be the Portugese models)

Fitting the Japanese spec 24 volt lights would be easy,or even the Canadian spec lights from a 85 BJ70.
I think the light mountings the same ,its only the 24v globes that are different.
You would only be fitting what was originally fitted to the pre 1990 models

.....and to think you didn't believe me when I said they were "blacked" out for war conditions. :D

Funny guy! I'm going to fit it with IR when the apocalypse comes!

According to the Mayans that could be any day now. :D

The brake lights and turn signal are on the rear bumper, the reverse light are on the upper assembly, the red light on the upper assembly must be the rear fog light, is mandatory to all cars in Spain, the one that is blacked out is not in use.

About the rest of the light (top portion) being blacked also, I can only think that those types of light are derivated from the complete light of the rest of the 70 series (top red, middle white, bottom yellow), so this way they don't have to change the body of the car only for the European market.

You are right. I would add, that there is no light in the black part of the upper right light.

bj73 Mi Toyota es Fantastico

I ended up with that truck. Thought the tail lights were strange.

Here's a more current photo of the truck. Since I removed the rear bumper I have no tail lights, I'm going to swap in a set of standard red/amber lights. If anyone wants some blacked out tail lights, these are available :)
