For the last three years, a few of us from the southern states have met in Albuquerque on the Thursday of the event, and made the last 5-6 hours of the drive to Ouray as a group.

First year there were 3 of us, last year I think 5. This year we've got at least 4 confirmed already.

Anyone is welcome to meet up and join us that Thursday morning, July 30th. We normally meet at the below location, a gas station off Hwy 550, north of Albq, at around 8:30am.

Warrior Gas Station
980 W HIGHWAY 550 BERNALILLO NM 87004

Some online mapping will show this on the right side of 550, but it's on the LEFT. Coordinates are: 35.325661, -106.565743 If you get to the Casino on the right, you went to far.

Further, a couple of us are coming from Louisiana, and meeting up with a 3rd in Texas along the way. We are leaving Louisiana on the 28th. If anyone coming from the east or in TX wants to meet up on the way to Albuq, that's cool too, just let me know.

Shoot me PMs or email andycne1 at gmail dot com if any questions.

Our plans are to leave early from Houston on the 29th. Willing to make adjustments to make the meet in ABQ and/or others passing through on the way.

@LEX whatever is easier for you guys, but you are more than welcome to meet up.

On the 28th we will be on I20 thru Dallas, then turn NW and head up toward Amarillo, overnighting in Childress.

29th is continue thru to Amarillo, then hit I40 for the last bit into Abq.

30th obviously is the last leg up to camp.

LEX...if you're taking I10 out, there's currently a few of us meeting in Comfort, Tx to drive up to ABQ together. We'll be meeting pretty early in the morning on 7/29 but you're welcome to join us. I have about a 2.5 hour drive to Comfort, so it will be a particularly early morning.

Looks like we'll end up meeting at Albuquerque close to the same time. Cool.

@Bloomer. I can take i10 and looks close to my original plan of when I leave Houston.

Good deal, LEX. We haven't determined what time we'll be meeting in Comfort yet....but should be working through it soon. I'll post up here when details are finalized so that anyone coming from South Texas that wants to caravan to ABQ is in the loop.

Anybody know the basics of tuning a CB or would I better off taking it to a radio shop? I know of a shop in Baytown, just thought I'd check with ya'll first.

It's a Midland 75-822 with a 4' firestik.

If you can pick up traffic half a mile away you are probably fine. My setup is similar and hasn't been tuned, works great.

Good to know. I haven't tried it yet, but will sometime this week.

Bloomer - thanks for adding me to the list above. I look forward to meeting the contingent in ABQ and caravaning on to Ouray. I signed up for HIH last year but had to later cancel due to a work conflict. This year I am zealously protecting the days on my calendar which can't get here soon enough...

So it looks like 6 of us will be heading up together from ABQ. 20% of the total rigs signed up coming in together. That's solid. Look forward to meeting you guys.

One week away till take off!

What trails did ya'll choose?

I chose Imogene to Ophir for Friday and Black Bear to Ophir/Last Dollar on Saturday.

Think a few of us are doing the below:

Clear lake / secret run on Friday

Cali / Corkscrew on Saturday

Imogene / Last Dollar on Sunday

Imogene is my favorite run up there. Good trails and the view at the top is unreal 360* and can see for miles. Have done Black Bear the last few years, gonna skip it this year. The Saturday run is the one I"m looking forward to this year. Did it 2 years ago, was the best start to finish scenery of any run we've done IMO.

@LEX you aren't doing a Sunday run?

As much as I want to, I thought that the gf and I would head out late morning for a casual cruise back. Will probably stay at ABQ again with time to explore it. We've both never been. Things could change though. Even though I didn't sign up for a trail Sunday, I'm sure I can still tag along on one. We'll see.

If you tell me what sort of things you'd like to see in your exploration of Albuquerque I can provide some suggestions. I won't be joining the caravan from ABQ because I'm heading up a day earlier. So I look forward to meeting you in Colorado. I drive a white, stock '99 model and will be camping in the Jayco Baja popup.

Good deal! I'll find you. I have a stock looking '99 Champagne Pearl one with a rtt.

Should we compare lists of what to bring besides food? I'd like to see what the experienced are bringing.

I have
*an extra coil pack
*extra air filter
*antigravity bag
*specific tools that fit
*extra misc batteries
*tow strap
...

The list is long...but mostly normal camping stuff

I need to get a spare coil pack for the truck, thx for reminding me.

Definitely tools for just about every part of the truck. But not too critical once you are there because finding a tool that you forgot among all the attendees will be cake.

Tire deflator and a Couple D rings on the recovery side.

Clothes for anywhere from mid 30s to low 80s. And footwear from sandals to waterproof boots cuz camp may be muddy.

Speaking of that...Rain gear. It will, without a doubt, rain. Make sure your tent is waterproof. After last year Im gonna take a small backup tent just in case.

As an aside we need to grab some firewood somewhere on the way up...
