well after mcgrew and such i had/have more tweaks to deal with.

the first issue to address was the Stauns. i was having an issue airing up/down with the Stauns, i just decided that if i had to break the rim down to fix it i was just going to pull them. my idea of fun is not wrestling the 42s around the garage.

so i pulled the Stauns and sold to some other poor bastard, you may be asking what i did with the extra hole. well being the cheap ass that i am i wanted to add some kind of rapid air down deal, but it will be a cold day before i shuck out grip for something like powertanks monster deflaters.

after some homework on pirate i just went with a simple air compressor tank drain. i drilled and tapped the extra holes and added the drain.

so after i got the drains installed, it was time to reseat the tire to the rim. with my brother around, i just have him jump up and down until the inner bead seats. then set the outer.
well unfortunately my Vans and skinny ass wasnt doing the job.
enter gold hill style here. grabbed a can of ether and said what the hell.
well i have yet to figure out how to play with explosives and cameras at the same time so no pics.
what i did find out is, less is better, and rubber stems die a short death when trying to inflate this way.
so at this point i have two 42s with both beads set and no valve stem in either:hmm:
so at this point no f ing way i am going to get licked by these things.
time to build a tool, i saw this in this site and decided to build one.

so i got the tires squared away.
the OBA needed cleaned up and finished.
to make Mcgrew this year i ended up pulling an all nighter on that friday, my work had been jerking me around and screwing up my schedule and mind.
the OBA was just roughed in, no switch and very little effort, not really my style.
the problems i encountered were the plumbing was ugly and leaky, the pump was putting too much heat to the manifold and then to my s***ty air hose. the rear port was under the truck behind the driver rear tire.

so to begin with i had to get a new outlet off the pump. hooked up with the guys at Sam Jennings and he set me up with some Aerofittings, they are kind of a compression type fitting.
i built a new air manifold
added a cooler and seperator
moved the rear port to the bumper.

Slick setups. I really like the air compressor dump idea. I wonder why more people don't run that....

Sweet!
I just finished a OBA install on my FJ40 before heading up to Portland for Christmas with the kids.
It did not occur to me to provide a cooler for the hot air coming off the compressor. How important is this. You have obviously encountered some overheating.
Have you had a chance to test the copper coil heat exchanger, and did you allow for a 100 deg. F day.
Thanks for sharing, I would post some pictures of my instll. except I am computer challenged.
I like the air down fittings you installed, sure beats messing with the valve stems every time, must put that on my list of up grades.
Currently working on winch/ bumper for the winch I got from Sue, design is done next step is to buy some steel.
Keep us posted.

i just had an issue with the heat going directly from the pump to my manifold/hose.
probably if i was using a real hose it wouldnt have been such an issue. i have just been using that cheap ass yellow coil hose.

i figured that there is no way my heat exchanger could be a bad thing.
and since there is not going to be a 100* day for 4 or 5 months idk how it will work out.
i know that on the initial cycle the copper was barely getting heat into the first coil.

i mostly wanted to get the seperator on there, my air bed is full of oil from mcgrew and there was/is a huge oil/dust mess on all my wheels.

i think i will run the pump a bit today, through a few cycles to see about the heat issue.

thanks for the props

Al did you score a York pump for your OBA, or what direction did you go.
if you know how to email send me the pics and i can post if you like.

I did use a special hose suitable for air conditioning service. There were a few comments on the Web that mentioned having failures from regular air hose use. I purchased most of my air fittings from a company in Medford (Fluid Connectors) great guys to work with, helped me a lot.
A heat exchanger is a great idea because by lowering the temp it reduces the air,s capacity to hold moisture, allowing the coallesing filter to remove more of it before it reaches the air tanks.
Did you plug the oil gallery to the top of the compressor, this will reduce the amount of oil that gets into the lines. I have the info if you need it.
Yes I did use a york pump it seems to be the best way to go ( the 10" stroke model ).
Thanks for the offer of posting help I sure could use some. I will take some pictures.

i didnt plug the oil hole. i read that it didnt really make a difference.

i cycled the pump a few times just now.
looks like the cooler and filter are doing their job.
as long as i run it at idle i am not rapidly filling the filter.

if i jump up to 2k+ then the little filter fills up pretty rapidly.

fluid connectors and sam jennings were big help.

I did plug the oil gallery, but I have not ran it yet due to the crush to get ready for our trip. I just have to connect the wires to the clutch and the pressure switch and it will be ready for a test run, maybe tomorrow.
I will let you know.

O/K I survived the trip to the garage to take some pictures for Kief.:grinpimp:
Our garage is bermed into the hill behind the house, and takes a long time to come up to ambient temp after a cold spell. Hence the procrastination:crybaby:.

I will download the pictures and send as soon as I can.
