I just arrived home from visiting my uncle and as we were partying last night and and I was showing him some wheeling pics I told him I wanted to winch my short bus. He told me he has a old ( early to mid 70's ? ) Warn winch. This morning before I left we went out to the garage and took a look at it. Well I immediately knew it wouldn't fit the short bus without many modifications. I told him that it looked like a winch that many LC guys like to run on the 40's so I took some pics and told him I would find out some info. I am currently going to google for some info but knew that you guys might be able to shed some light.

He told me that it did function just fine when him and his buddy took it off of his jeep way back when and that it had been inside out of the weather since. He was guessing maybe 30yrs ago. I told him it probably came on a jeep from the factory or a dealer add on back in the day. Is this winch worth anything even though it has a Jeep tag on it?

I don't know much about Warn winches and hope someone can help. The serial # is 8218 if it too blurry in the pic and the part # is SE2067001. Off to google I go!

Ok, that was fairly easy. It is a 8724. Since I am not near it now I cannot date it as I don't see the date code in any of the pics I have. The serial # appears to be 58, 218 or 68, 218. I might just have to go back and get it and make sure it works. Still any help or info would be appreciated.

It's one of the most reliable workhorse's out there, but you know this already.
It mounts feet forward...

One of the best winches ever made. Can only be mounted to the 80 with certain bumpers or modifications to the grill.

I forgot to mention, that winch may be worth quite a bit of money (more than an equivalent condition non-Jeep branded unit) to someone restoring a Jeep CJ. Just something to consider.

That is what Warn calls the 8274 you could put it up for 550.00 someone would buy it pretty fast I have one on my 40 works great :hillbilly:

FYI, I asked one of our experts on the older winches here. Unfortunately, he doesn't have any info that references the numbers on the winch. We do know, for what it's worth, it's an early model 8274 made for Jeep with the Prestolite motor.

So, is that motor a good thing, rebuildable, swapable?
What does early mean, `60s?

Thanks Andy, Mud is an awesome resource!

Motors are pretty much all swappable between years, just depends on whether or not the motor shaft is keyed or splined (requires a different drive gear that can be purchased from Warn).

I think mine's a 1979 and it had a Prestolite motor.

It's re-buildable, but only 1.5 or 3 hp (can't remember which). Rather than re-build mine, I replaced it with a 6 hp motor for a Warn 9.5XP. Bolt-on replacement, though it is a bit longer than the stock Prestolite.

The 8274 was introduced in 1974 (hence the "74" in the name) so it can't be any older than that. Mine was manufactured in 1978 and it had a Prestolite motor on it.

Good info all, I wonder if the OP is following all this.

Oh yeah, I am following. My uncle told me I could sell the winch Since it won't fit in the short bus but now I think I will get it, test it and see what happens. If it needs a rebuild then it will get one. I don't think I will sell It though whether it gets rebuilt or not.

Thank you all for the info. Very informative and thanks to the Warn rep ( Andy )for chiming in as well. to you all.
