Anyone use this method? Is there enough "better" to justify the cost compared to a normal snatch block?

If you haven’t bought an old style, then the price difference isn’t too much more to get a new style one. Main saving is weight and space.

yes, that is starting to be what I was concluding until I saw the Factor 55 soft shackle/pulley for $140. The thing it seems to have is a rope retention system using little rubber "spikes" to help retain the rope on the pulley if it were to slacken. That might be nice feature but doesn't seem like a must have.

I have a factor 55 rope retention pulley. It got sent to me in a shipping error, so I just kept it rather than shipping it back (to clarify, I did pay for it). It seems well made like the rest of their products, but I haven't had a chance to try it out. Like grinchy says, it is super light and hardly takes up any space.

I have used them a lot.. and I don't like them..

Any shock loading and the rope can come out, then you have synthetic Rope on a soft shackle.. if its under load it will slice through with any dynamic loading (i.e. your winching in)..
there is also friction of the ring on the soft shackle, I guess under heavy loads it can heat up.. basically the same argument as the Hawse fairlead..
Synthetic rope does not have a very high temperature working limit..

Regular pulley blocks fully capture the rope and prevent this.. the factor 55 one with the rubber nibs on it kinda does this as well, but why re-invent the wheel as they say..

other than ease of packing, I don't see any advantage to the snatch ring.

full disclosure I use Regular pulleys and a roller fairlead with my synthetic rope

YMMV...
