So who plays in the dirt with 35's?

My friend say's i don't need more 33"s on FJ60 to wheel and that anyone running 35"s has so much more problems, brakeing distance, turn those big tires, the added rotational weight etc...

Well Figuring my rig will soon be SOA'd and corrected gearing, and some steering mods to assist. Will I just be driving a street queen?

Does your friend drive a SWB rig? Because the only way to get the long ass rockers and long ass overhang of a big wagon off the rocks is with bigger tires, and the best way to fit bigger tires and gain a better ride/more flex is with a SOA conversion.

I ran 33's for a long time and didn't have enough clearance with them. I wheel with 35's now and it makes a huge difference, I shouldn't have chickened out like I did and gotten 37's....

I have ran 35s on the trail with 7 inches of lift for the past two years. I can honestly say that 35s are way too small. 37's should be the starting size for wheeling a Fj60 in the rocks.

I've noticed over the years that different people have a different idea as to what 4 wheeling is. To some, running logging roads is wheeling while others are on the other end of the extreme. Your friend must be at the logging / gravel road end of the definition.

The FJ60 requires some big tires due to it's wheelbase and especially it's long rear overhang. And 33's ain't big tires. In my opinion (like the others so far) is that 37's and larger are needed for moderate and harder trails.

I can't wait to wheel mine with 37's....I have wheeled it with 32's and 35's...now 37's....I really wanna get mine back on the road....

Brand for brand, the difference between 33s and 35s in terms of size, weight and performance is negligable. You can notice it, but you have to try. Neither is a big tire for a '60.

I submit that your friend is not familiar with Cruisers and/or with true off road use of Cruisers.

Mark...

He probably drives Heeps or something. They do not need big tires for obvious reasons.

Haha he would die if I sent this to him... he has 84 FJ60 too with OME lift and some 31"s. he also has an 80 series (I think 1994) that had 285's on it and I traded him straight up for my 265's that were on my Tacoma. He thought those were too big for that 80 series cruiser! I told him was crazy, but I got upgraded tires on an even-stevens trade, worked for me. hehehe

:D :D

He must be very conservative then. ;p

Some guys are nuts I guess.....

My 60 is SUA with about 3.5" of lift on 33s. On my first real wheeling trip with it, I definately found the limitations of it. I was dragging over rocks and berms, got it high centered, and departure angle definately needs improvement. See this thread in Trails:

In order to maintain the overall carrying capacity of it, I will not mod the body. So, my next project will be SOA (including hysteer setup) and SR and 37's. Like was mentioned above, it all depends what you do and are planning on doing with it. My rig is almost a twin to DBS311's red 62 (but his paint is better ;) )! Here's a pic of Clifford (and Freightdog) prior to new ownership.
