after driving the Fj Cruiser this weekend i might buy one. I know nothing about the engine and drive train on this truck. could someone expand on the differences for the different years and is the all aluminum v6 a long lasting engine? Thanks

407,000km (252,000+ miles) on mine and still running well....I'd say it's a long lasting engine.

07-09 little less horse power. 10 and up more emission stuff but more horse power. There are Several fj's with 200 k plus. The 4wd sensors on the transfer case can be a weak point. They tell the computer if u are in 4h or 4l sometimes they go bad and you have to bypass the computer to get you rear locker and a trac going. But in terms of the engine very reliable. Good luck!

The 1GR-FE engine with VVT-i (in FJCs from 07-09) was used by the Tacoma platform for several years before it was put into FJCs. It's been one of the most reliable engines for Toyota. The slightly modified update (2010+) with dual VVT-i is still used in Tacomas and now 4Runners. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine

There have been minor issues with the A750E/F auto transmission. Most that I've read about (and some experienced firsthand) have been more of a nuisance than outright failure or anything catastrophic. I had the reported "shudder" at about 20mph and again at 40mph. It is pretty subtle and at its worst feels like you've hit rumble strips in the pavement. You can accelerate out of it, but most have found that swapping out the transmission fluid fixes the issue. The recommended method is the most passive. Drop the pan underneath the transmission, clean the screen filter, replace parts and fill with about 5.5-6 quarts of World Spec ATF (about $7-9/quart). Some have repeated this process a few weeks/month later to replace even more "old" ATF in the system. If you do a more forceful flush of an automatic transmission with more than 35-40K on the odometer, you risk pushing debris into the valve bodies in the transmission and creating a far worse condition than you began with.
