Great day out guys! I really liked the mix of trucks we had show up. Troopy, Two 55s, 3rd Gen 4RNR, FJ Cruiser, 62 and a 100! Good group of guys and great teamwork when things went south. It was cool to see different pieces of recovery gear in action too. The Max Trax (and the troopy) helped make short work of getting me unstuck and those with chains really showcased how big of a difference they make in the conditions.

The FJ Cruiser was AWOL? ;-)

Nice pics as usual.

Loved the black and whites of the Troopy and 55 churning through deep stuff. The one of the Pig headed uphill under the red rocks is now my screen saver. Thanks, Jonathan.

After seeing how good chains worked there I got a set of the Rud 4x4 from Hugh. Only got one pair and so far have heard some differing opinions on whether they're best front or rear. Most think rear is best but Bill Burke says front is better if you only have one pair in his video "Getting Unstuck". Actually he said front in most conditions but suggested putting them on the rear for long steep descents to keep the back from passing the front. That's more messing with chains than I want to do, so I think I'll run on the rear because I have more tire/chain clearance there. But would like to get another set so I can chain up all four and bust drifts just like the Troopy!

Ace:
I've always chained up fronts when only chaining up one end in 4WD. That way there's traction for both steering and drive wheels. Best, of course, is all four.

We always chain up the rears on work truck only because that is the only axel that they work on. That said, I prefer the front chained as well due to the reasons Jim stated. The Rud's hold incredibly tight to the tires and you might find that they are runnable on your fronts. I tried Greg's out on my truck and had no issues with them hitting my UCAs or fenders. I was amazed how effective they were. I'd like to get a set of 4 next year for sure.

Good times Saturday! I can't wait to do it again!

Was up on the Mesa Saturday and noticed they had plowed Lands End Road so turned down it to see how far it was open. It only went about 1/2 mile but sitting about 200' further was this very stock Ford pickup buried to the frame. I asked the old driver where he thought he was going. Answered just wanted to take his dogs out to play in the snow. Here he was sitting on top a 4-5' of packed snow with no tracks except from snowmobiles. Told me he was doing ok until he slowed to try and turn around. No way to turn as he would have dropped off the packed part. I considered trying a winch rescue but he was too far from solid ground and nothing to anchor me. So I carried him out to get a cell signal and call a wrecker all the way from Jct. Took him back to his truck to wait for the wrecker. I hope it got there ok or he, the wife and dogs would have a long cold night. I can't imagine why he thought he could drive on top of the snowmobile tracks. I think it's possible he did not realize he was off the road, as in senility.

I do but there was no place to set it. They won't dig into a frozen road. Truth of the matter is I was wearing bike tights and the sun was going down. 'Nuff said. ;-)

Just got in a short snow run up and down Old Grand Mesa Road on my way down from skiing. First one of the season?

Just reread this thread and recalling how much fun it was. Good day!
