Forgot for those that weren't sure, this is just west of Reno, NV.

I know it's late notice and people probably have plans, but I would like to make a run to Verdi Peak on Saturday (12-30-06). This will be a snow run and hopefully it will be deep.

The meeting place will be the Scolari's Grocery Store at I80 and Robb Dr. at 0900 hours with a 0930 departure. This will allow everyone to get any food they need and there is a gas station right there for the last minute fillups.

Anyone is welcome, just bring whatever you need for a day in the snow. Hope to see you there. We'll be talking on Channel 4 on the CB.

I didn't realize you had emailed me, sorry. I just emailed you back.

Hope to see you there.

I can't make it. I have a ski comp tomorrow, and I can't miss it. This sucks because I can literally see Verdi Peak from my back deck. Oh well, have fun everyone.

Well,
How was the trip?

Well, we had some technical difficulties. RustyTLC, Dan was having some problems on the ice getting up the hill on Dog Valley Road. Couple of times getting sideways and sliding towards the ditch, made him and his wife a little nervous. He aired down to around 7 lbs, and his swampers were still not having any of the ice. I pulled him up to a side road and we were discussing whether to keep going or not and noticed that his DS upper shackle bolt was backing out. Dan looked at and realized that the nut had come off, so we hammered it back in and decided to call it a day.

So we didn't get very far at all, which wasn't a huge deal because it wasn't looking like there was going to be very much snow. So we figured we would wait for the next storm and a couple of more people for the just in case factor.

Which means, you have to get your SOA done.:D

Sorry I screwed things up for the rest of the crew, and I appreciate everyones patience.

Not exactly my crowning moment, needing a tug from a Lexus. :o Either the swampers just suck hind tit on snow or I suck at driving. I'll find out after I put the BFG AT's back on and make another trip. I'm really hoping the swampers suck on snow.

I think I figured out why I lost the shackle bolt nut. My header is real close to the nut on that side. I think the nylon just softened up from the heat and the nut vibrated off. All the rest of the nuts were still in place. Maybe I should replace the nylocks with castel nuts and drill the bolts for cotter pins.

Second embarrasment of the day.
After a quick stop at Lowes to replace the nut we took a little trip on the pole line roads in the hills behind our house. Sunny dry dirt roads, life was a lot better. We checked out a road we have wanted to explore that goes behind the Gun Club and connects to the road that goes up to Hells Flat. The road goes real close to the "rabbit" station on the sporting clays course. Nobody was out there so I figured we could make it by before there was a problem. No such luck, about the time we were within 40 yards of the station two cartloads of shooters showed up. :o It was clear they would hold fire until we were by so I kind of boogied down the hill and up the canyon so as not to hold them up to much.

Not exactly the best weekend I've had but better than staying home and thinking about doing something.

Come on Dan, nothing wrong with getting a tug by a :princess: :grinpimp:

I got to thinking after we were heading back, it probably would have helped on the off camber section to leave the lockers off. Sometimes the open rearend helps to anchor the vehicle by only spinning one tire, instead of both. When both are spinning, the vehicle will follow gravity.

I learned the hard way going through the little sluice on the rubicon with my Jeep. It cost me a rear quarter panel.

I follow that line of logic, in retrospect it makes sense. A couple of weeks ago I was playing around on an icy stretch of the construction road near my house. I figured out the the lockers made tracking worse. I should have applied that to the situation Saturday.

The up side was :princess: is even more ready to consider buying an 80 or 100. I think it might have had something to do with you giving me a tug, but more likely she saw you all sitting warm and cozy in your rig while we shivvered in ours. The 40 is great fun with a Bikini top in the summer but leaves a lot to be desired with the soft top on a winter day.

Anything I can do to help:cheers:

Sounds like a '00+ 100 (or new FJ) with TRAC would have been perfect on the off-camber icy sections...

The FJ is still on the short list of options. After seeing how Dick did on the trail into Bronco it looks like a decent all around rig based on price/performance. We should probably take one for a test drive.

Just rent one like Nolen did for SnT...then you can REALLY test it out...just be sure to get the comprehensive rental insurance that covers everything (just in case ;) ) .

Seeing Dick travel behind me/us in his bone stock FJ...for crying out loud even street type treads to boot...made a believer out of me! Imagine with 33"/35", front locker and all decked out what the thing could do! Not too bad for an off-the-production line new gen IFS rig.

AHHHHH...
At least Im not the only one who has had to take a strap on these runs!!!
Sorry it wasnt such a great day for you Rusty...
How is the lil missus feeling about wheeling after that.

Jack,
GOD KNOWS, im trying my lil heart out to get this rig done ASAP, but the little details are hanging my up worse than anything...
IM drooling to go wheeling!!!
Its not good when youre driving on the road, looking at trails and thinkng..."I bet I could make that..." Only youre driving in a Ford F550 diesel, dually that is loaded with sprinkler pipe and tools...

:princess: wasen't worried. The road camber was into the hill so the worst case would have put us in a ditch. She has been putting up with my crappy driving for 25 years. Saturday was nothing compare to some of the asshat stunts I have pulled over theyears.
