Anyone have a pic of the template alighnment? I am installing the SS81HF snorkel and I am not clear on exactly where I place the template specific to the air intake.

I appreciate any/all insight.
Jake

Is that the genuine Toyota one or the Safari?

...it is the Safari/ARB.

Slee's site has one:
Slee - Snorkel Install (Toyota 80 Series Land Cruiser)

Hold on tight to the drill with the hole saw on it - when that thing bucks it can leave bruises. Take it slow and easy.

A few tricks I found from mine...

Get some door-edge guard plastic and put it on the edges of the opening that your arm is going through. I found out the hard way that this metal can be freekin' sharp and can have barbs that would poke through tape.

I put some silicone on the snorkel's studs. It will push through the holes to the inside a bit. This gives you something sticky to put the washer and nut on for that back stud that your fingers can barely reach.

For tightening the inside-the-fender nuts, put a leash on your wrench - then you're guaranteed not to drop it down in the fender.

If you don't like your antenna mast, now is the time to change it out - before you put in the snorkel.

Tape the holes before you drill - it cuts down on the paint flaking.

Paint the holes - you don't have to be overly neat. There will be a snorkel hiding your mistakes.

Measure, test fit, measure. If you drill the hole and the A pillar isn't lining up right, cut the hole in the direction it needs to move. Again, the snorkel will hide some mistakes and give you some wiggle room.

Measure again. There are two critical bits - the big tube must go into the big hole and the A pillar mount must be within reach of the upright. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't bother to drill the stud holes until after I have these two worked out - then move the template according to where the big hole ends up.

You have the big template that came with it, right? Or are you working from the taped together printouts?

Huge Thanks...! I actually have the big template. I am just getting nervous about the idea of intentionally putting holes in the truck and want to make sure I have the template positioned properly.

I needed a beer after drilling that big hole.

Oh, another note - the hole you drill is going to be rough and nasty with super sharp barbs. Use some finishing disks (3m brown 2") on a angle die grinder to smooth things out. I think I went through 5-6 disks.

If the template is lined up with the fender, radio antenna and the A pillar break - the hole you drill should be within 1/8" of right in all directions. That said, I had to push the hole back towards the A pillar about 1/16" to get within range of good for mounting to the A pillar. See also a long time with a burr wheel on the die grinder whittling away at the edge of that fender. Then I had to push the stud holes back 1/16" too. That said, the Snorkel itself is pretty forgiving in hiding the 'push'.

Thats why I said to wait on drilling the holes for the studs until you're happy with the big hole and the A pillar fitment. Once you have those good, you can re-position the template based on where the snorkel's big hole actually sits, then drill the stud holes.

Another way to skin the cat

I was freeked about the drill option. I marked the hole placement then covered the bottom of my jigsaw with duct tape and did a nice job. Eather way you'll have to smooth out the burs. It has been on the truck for 10 years and have had no problems.

Grench, thanks for the tips, it definitely made a big difference. The job is completed... My idle seems a bit higher so I need to make sure all lines are connected.

Whoot! How about a picture of it?

Mission completed... Thanks to all who posted with instructions and a Big Thanks to Grench for some additional tips!

Interesting mirrored photo...

Snorkel looks good!

wait... isn't that on the wrong side!!???

I just put mine on a week ago. How did you get the last nut on the bolt (the one way back in the back behind the antenna)? I simply didn't put it on because I couldn't reach it.

TexasJack,
I could not reach that bolt and my arms are too big to get close therefore I did not put it on... I have read other posts stating you can access through the antenna area. I am driving now and keeping an eye on it to make sure it is not a problem.

The pic is a mirrored flip, I took it with my phone and was in a hurry...

I put some silicone on the snorkel's stud before pushing it into the fender. This left a bit of goop on the threads on the -inside-. I could barely touch the stud with my finger tips - but since the silicone is a bit sticky, I simply slid a washer on - it stuck. Then started a nut - again, the silicone helps. Once they were started I put a wrench on a leash.

My arms are not exactly tiny. I was reaching through the same hole that the air tube goes through. Be sure to put tape or door edge guard on that sheet metal before reaching through - that spot can be VERY sharp.

Anyone with experience installing a Safari Snorkel care to take a look at this crappy pic re: SS81HF template alignment? There's about 1/2" gap between the bottom of the template and the top of the flare gasket, and the template is aligned with the fender's rear edge. Seems about right to me, but without a factory side marker to perfectly align it, it's a bit of a guestimate. I'm going to drill the 92mm hole first and then the pillar bracket holes, and adjust the template if needed and align everything to that.

If you've got the top and side lined up as many threads on this have all said...TRUST THE TEMPLATE. Most of us here in the states do not have the side marker as an add'l allignment check. It what I did several years ago doing mine and it came out just fine. There is not much of a gap between the flare and bottom of the skorkel, so it looks fine.

Do tape over the areas you are going to drill and at least prime the edges when done to prevent rust.

Do take a deep breath before doing the big hole! :D

Right on. The antenna interferes with the template but I get it now. Measure 100 times, cut once!
