Getting ready to place my order for everything next week. Decided to save on shipping by ordering my ARB, OME lift, and possibly a snorkel all at once. Gonna kill my credit card but hopefully I can get all the install done over my 3 day break from school and work. My question is in regards to the safari snorkel and the issue of wind noise. I run Dueler AT's because they are quiet for an AT. My 97 is used mostly on long interstate trips at 75-80mph and some daily driving. I like the fact that it is quiet. How much of an increase in wind noise will I experience inside the cabin coming from the snorkel. My yakima racks are already driving me crazy without the fairing installed. I want the snorkel but do not want to hear a constant droaning whistle coming from the passenger side. Will I regret the snorkel or is it aerodynamically shaped so well that there is no noise. I have not actually seen one in person as modded 80's are few and far between here.
thanks in advance

No noise that you will notice. I have a full expedition rack on my 93 and it masks all other sounds so I don't think a snorkel will affect bo-diddly.

I still don't see without the cetrifuge-looking thing on top how the snorkel would really improve in dusty desert conditions?

Most dust settles at about 3-5 feet above road level. See: The Vehicle Dependant Expedition Guide by Tom Sheppard

I've noticed a difference in air filter crud after long trips on dirt roads after I put the snorkle on. Now that I run a pre-cleaner, I've seen even more of a drop. After my Baja trips I'll dump out quite a bit of junk from the pre-cleaner.

...OR do I need the insurance and cool factor of the snorkel?

Married and have to justify for the wife huh???????

Just get it, I've actually needed mine 3 times just due to flooding.

There are a lot of variables with 3' of water. That's pretty deep...

That being said...I'd definitely want a snorkle for it; however, waterproofing a gasoline engine is tricky. You'll want to extend the diff breathers as well.

Already have done the diff breathers and other cheap mods...now time for the big stuff...and Im not married...just trying to justify that big hole that goes through the fender....Charleston does sit below sea level and we do flood a lot..guess thats justification enough....definately dont want to hydrolock the fairly new to me cruiser

Yea, but if you are going through water deep enough to justify a snorkle, you had better seal up your spark plugs, distributor, fuses and other electrical stuff also.

Hey mooker, you don't drive that thing through the flooding SALT waters on downtown Charleston on a full moon high tide, do you?

NO definatley not through the salt water...I try to avoid low areas of downtown on a full moon high tide...I do sometimes get fresh rainwater storm backup that comes up a couple of feet where I live downtown though.

Noise is not a problem. With the ARB and lift, you'll lose 1-2 mpg. It's worth it. Getting hit and protecting your family is worth the additional fuel cost. That and it rides better with the OME. I don't see too much silt in the filter anymore. The occassional yellow jacket, bee, or bug will end up in the air cleaner. The snorkel does allow much cleaner and cooler air into the system. Get ready for all of the questions though. It's cool at first, but gets irritating after a while.

Why the hell you doing all this to the truck then. If its Sleed, ARB'd who gives a #$@% about wind noise?

Keep it under 45mph and on the dirt you won't have to worry about a thing :D

After a Tequila induced state of stupidity I got up the nerve to drill that hole and install mine. No regrets really, but unless you are really going to use it, its a waste and just another fad toy/mod. Think it over, because its one mod that's expensive to undo, and you pretty much guarantee that the only person who will buy your truck will be a diehard Cruiserhead (right Kaderabak?). I had zero wind noise with mine and its nice to feed that clean fresh air to the supercharger, if you have one.

Jim

Guilty as charged, and that same person may get tired of explaining that it's not a periscope.

The only problem I've ever had with the snorkel was a combination of user error and mother nature. Driving with the passenger side window down about an inch for ventilation in a driving rain, it funneled rain onto my floorboard on that side. Some have called bs on me over this but it happened.

As far as wind noise and roof racks, I have the Slee African Outback rack and it is quiet as a slightly noisy mouse. Very little wind noise (to the point that I can run on the highway with the sunroof hatch cover slid back and barely hear the rack. No rattles or squeaks either. Thumbs up.

My goal is to build my truck to be very capable but still very well mannered on the road...although the 80 does this very well in stock form I believe that it can be improved....I want OME because I dont like the wallowing soft ride of the stock suspension...The ARB is functional for protection as we have a lot of deer hitting car kind of accidents...none of these will really increase noise...the snorkel is kind of the one thing that is kind of functional but more cosmetic than anything for me...I want to be able to cruise down the highway to my hunting spot in a comfortable, good handling ride...then make it through the mud and creek to get to the cabin and duck blinds....I would love to have a rig with all the goodies: sliders, snorkle, arb bumper, roof basket, rear tire carrier, 6" lift and 35's but that will be some time down the road when I have another daily driver.

Snorkles are good when you're doing 1000 miles of this....

Hltoppr, you need to make a photo-journal of some of your trips without too many ugly pictures of the driver :).... it'd be fun to read/view.

Doesn't the TLCA have some sort of magazine or something? Maybe you could send the photos there....
