P.S. These are from a trip we did to get to Angel Falls (the Tallest Waterfalls in the World http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Falls)

Incredible ! I think you need at least 2 of these orange BFG's:

Alberto, You need better friends .......
The ones that will let you ride inside with them. :)

Hi Ward,

My personal opinion on all these things, is that its better to have it and not to need it than needing it and not having it. I had a Safari Snorkel on my FJ60 in Venezuela (with a Gasoline Powered 2F), and it might have been my perception, but I felt that the engine ran a little smoother, a little faster, and a little happier (but again, it might have been just my imagination). On the other hand, I see the advantage of bringing colder air to the intake, so in that, it is already an advantage.

Thanks, Alberto!

It's official - I have justification from a gas snorkel expert that there ARE benefits beyond sex appeal.

Or I could take the easy way out for sex appeal - just glue/duct tape it on and not bother with holes, screws, etc.

Is that photoshopping ( the method that makes fat folks look skinny ) or have you already installed the snorkel? :)

Hello,

A snorkel helps a lot if you drive through dirt roads often. No appreciable power gains, just air a bit more clean for the engine.

Get a proper pre-filter if you can. The Toyota part is a good choice. I would even recommend the whole OEM assembly over other choices.

Make sure you seal all the connections with grease or silicone. This is especially true if you expect to cross water/mud bodies.

If possible, get the Toyota snorkel-specific air box or modify yours to match it. It will make it much easier to hook up with the snorkel piping.

My two cents.

I am ashamed/embarrassed to admit there is one sitting a box in my shop - new, OEM Toyota - just can't find my roll of duct tape.

Wow. That looks like a SERIOUSLY EPIC trip! I've done short river crossings in a 79 where the water came over the bonnet and I had to take a deep breath once I had crossed. Mind you, the water was flowing very fast and I could feel the car moving a fair bit with the current. But some of those crossings you guys are doing look insane.
Looks like some beautiful, epic country too.

A fairly simple question - is there any value to be had from fitting a snorkel to a gas engine?

I understand the advantage of cooler/denser air for diesels.

I also understand the sex appeal of a chunk of PVC hangin' off the A pillar, along with the many stimulating conversations to be had at gas stations...

No plans to ford rivers, creeks or streams, but I would like to maximize the output, efficiency and longevity of my rig.....plus, my wife thinks snorkels are cool.

If it is worthwhile to build an air box for a Vortec swap (see some Torfab snaps below), why not continue the air intake tubing through a modified OEM air filter, then through the fender and into the base of a snorkel, bypassing the engine compartment completely as a source for air??

Guess I could post this question on the 80 series board (as I see a lot of 80s with OEM, Safari and other snorkels on gas motors) but 7X guys are my preferred source of intel and advice on tech, grooming, marital affairs, etc..

Love to hear your thoughts, gents.

I love the look of the snorkel on my FJ80... it just screams "been there done that"

I know other people prefer the cleaner look of a stock truck, but not this guy

Checkout the air box we custom build on my 6.0 Vortec swap. It does conect to the snorkel.
Will be waterproof once we are done with it... and will likely get a snorkel pre-cleaner later on...

Just my 2 cents...

clarlino -
Thanks for the update/post. Clean fab job. Still pondering need (none) and cool-factor lust (lots). The 5.3 will get installed next month.

More to follow...

with those vortec engines you have to bare in mind the throttle bodys are 4" (102mm) and a lot of those plastic snorkles have between 3" and 3 1/2" inlets so they can be quite constrictive on the intake, a 4" inlet is almost twice the surface area of 3" ( pi × r2 with pi = 3.14)

Currently leaning toward not installing the snorkel on the 73. Little or no functional benefit to be had and a fair amount of effort/expense. May have a new OEM kit going to Classyfieds.

I think you get more benefit from the cool and cleaner air generated by the snorkel...

Heck everyone knows that. :)
