I did a search and could not come up with too many pics/info on how to run the intake on a safari snorkel kit. Can you guys help me out with an air tight solution to my problem? Below is a pic of my engine. It has the air cleaner assembly that sits up top...so Im not too sure which direction to go.

Find a factory GM horn style aircleaner. Plumb into the horn. You will probably need to make some gaskets to get it all water tight. Other modifications as well. Most have a heat riser on the horn that will need to be sealed. I would design it in such a way that you can easily disconnect it when not in use. A Safari Snorkel will not allow for enough airflow on a SBC, IMO.

i was worried about the amount of air too...thanks a lot for the info

I am really confused about the air flow issue....how can the truck get any more air through the stock horn on a stock air cleaner than through the snorkle??? after all is pullin air from under the hood while the snorkle is pullin air from an outside source....

Too small an air passage and the engine ends up "working" to pull air into the intake, just like exhaust. A 350 will not only pull a greater volume of air through an intake but also at a faster velocity sometimes.

Mine seems to be working fine but then again I have not had it set up any other way...maybe I should try it and see what happens...any idae what the side effects of runnin the snorkle are???

I believe the horns are designed to create a vortex of air. When pulling from a "hose" you don't get the same amount of air supply. If Safari Snorkel made both right and left snorkels (don't for 60/62 series) you could probably supply and average V8 with the necessary air needs with a double horn air cleaner and two snorkels. Plus the added BLING factor.

If you made the system with a disconnect, you could have both. During a water crossing you most likely will not need max airflow. But disconnect when not in use.

Side effects would be loss of power and most likely MPG if left hooked up full time.

Quick calculation of air needs.

2F:

4.2 liters x 3000 RPM = 12600 liters of air per minute.

SBC

5.7 liters x 4500 PRM = 25650 liters of air per minute.

V8 needs double the air at near max power output. Safair snorkle designed for 2F power plant. IF you assume the snorkle is working at near max air volume then it should supply a V8 good to 2200 RPM.

There are many other factors to take into consideration. But this give you an idea how much more air a SBC is going to require.

Ok.....now I get it...I guess I now need to find some sort of SBC air cleaner housing...just when I thought I was getting close to the end of parts purchases...

So find yourself a double horned air cleaner. Hook one to the snorkle. Set up the second horn with a block of plate of some sort. When you need the snorkle install your block off. Otherwise run it open.

But first disconnect your snorkle and see how much of a difference you see after a few tanks of gas. Maybe your not choked off too bad. It may not make a hugh difference depending your your driving habits and conditions.

Source of double horn? I think mid 80's L69 engine equiped cars. (IROC w/5 speed?) had them? I'm guessing. Formula Firebird? Many muscle car era vehicles from 60-70's.
