Hi all,
winter is coming and I need to get my truck ready. There is no offroading in the plans but I always carry a strap of some sort in each of my vehicles and that served me well in the past. I spend a lot of time on snowy roads.

The question is for an OEM equipped LX570, GVWR 3345kg (7385lb) which snatch strap is the better one: 17600, 24000, 35000 lbs max breaking strength? I read that the strap should be between 2x and 3x GVW and higher is not better. Even the smaller of the three is more than 2x (I have one of that in my Outback). So I guess the question is between 24k and 35k. If it matters the first two are ARB, last is ALL-TOP, and all are 30ft.

In my case the other pieces of the recovery chain are: rated 3/4 shackles, rated soft shackles, factory recovery points in front and back, and the rated hitch receiver shackle. The possible recovery vehicles could be just another truck, or a snow plow (e.g. the huge highway plows). Winching is unlikely unless I have to hire a tow truck that has one. The soft shackles are for the case when I have to extend my snatch strap with the other party's strap/rope/winch line/etc. or the other party's recovery points do not accommodate my strap/ D shackles.

Please advise.

High quality is probably the most important thing here. I'd trust the real rating of a 15k ARB snatch strap over a 20k unknown knock-off Chinese "brand".

You're correct that you don't necessarily want the strongest one you can find. For kinetic ropes they need to stretch and if it's too strong it won't stretch sufficiently. A tow rope would be a different story - stronger is generally better, though as with everything you have to think about where you want your weakest link to be (a nylon rope, a metal shackle, etc).

I can't recall with snatch straps but with some recovery gear I've seen there's a "working load" and a "breaking load". You might see shackles with 9.5k or 12k WLL but a 36k "breaking" load. Make sure the loads you're looking at are apples-to-apples.
 
Edit - I agree with @linuxgod. Quality matters. Make sure it is rated and tagged with MBS and WLL.

I'd go for the middle one, but I am not an expert.

I have an ARB snatch strap now. If I was to start over, I'd skip a snatch strap and go to a kinetic recovery rope.


We recommend using your GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) x4 to find the appropriate rope, if you fit
between sizes, round up.

Efficacy, not storage volume. The KRR stores more energy.
 
Second thought: take a recovery course or two with a I4WDTA instructor before buying anything. You can buy all kinds of gear, but learning more and why will pay off in spades.

I do not have time for a course now, the weather is rain and more rain here, and the snow is already in the mountains so I'll stick with the strap.
24000 is 3x the weight and being ARB should be good quality.
 
my kinetic rope is 30ft 1” rated at 33500 lbs. I stuck it in an old duffel bag. It’s pretty big and heavy. Haven’t had to use it much for me, have used it for others a couple times.
Saw a good idea to get. 20 ft rope and a 10 ft strap, then you can save some size and mix and match as necessary. That’s what I’d do if I was to buy again.
