Snapper Comet/8HP BnS Runs, Then Quits

i bought a snapperC from my dad. it'll crank, and run but as soon as you get on and put it in gear... it'll go around 10-15' and quit.

seems like it'll sit and run in N as long as its got gas...

we thought maybe it was a bad condenser but i pulled the flywheel and there is no points and condenser. i did sand the magnet and coil while i was there.

cleaned the gas cap but not really sure that its not a vapor lock issue...

my next move is to take the carb off and clean it real good.


any ideas?

local small engine guy says carb rebuild in my future. so i'm going to take it off and drop it by and let them do it. i could rebuild but as far as tweaking it,.... i'll let somebody that knows.

Loosen the black vent screw in the cap and see if the problem goes away.

The Power screw is on the bottom of the carb. If it is too far in, it will idle but not have any power, therefore it dies under the slightest load.

definately sounds like a fuel issue. Like D'animal says make sure your tank vent is open.

90% of todays small engine repairs are fuel related thanks to crappy unstable/cheap fuels.

Ethanol sucks...try to only use non ethanol high octane gas and never buy more than you can use in 2 weeks for your lawn equipment to prevent problems in the future.

Most post early 80's small engines have solid state ignition (no points/cond) and those briggs that do, many can be converted to solid state with just a new coil.

Since your just taking the carb in go ahead and buy a new fuel filter, remove and clean the fuel tank, clean all the lines and replace the lines if needed. I can't tell you how many times i've rebuilt a carb for a customer and they either don't clean their tank or fill up the tank with a old stale gas from their gas can.

For every 45min to 1 hr that i spend to rebuild a rider mower carb i can spend up to half that time just cleaning the tank and lines.

The comet tank is much easier than other brands as far as cleaning the tank, many front engine riders (poulan/craftsman/junk deere/mtd) have tanks under the seat that are much harder to get to.

hahahaha, just seen this.

thanks but i already have exactly that, that i've had to rob the linkage and the clutch off of within the last month.

i'm gonna buy me a new mower once i figure out the best deal for under $1,400.
