Well I finally got my 60 smogged!
I failed a couple weeks ago and posted up for some advice. Thanks to everyone who chimed in! ANd a special thanks to Jim C who was nice enough to answer each and every email and each and every silly question!
I flunked with high HC and CO so I went back to the drawing board and went back through the AI system and everything seemed OK. Then I went through the list Jim sent me. AIr Cleaner, plugs, Timing, valve adjustment, premium gas etc.. I did the GTP (Guaranteed to Pass) fuel treatment and, whoa, the thing passed with flying colors!!
I'm not sure what the silver bullet was, but the smog guy mentioned something I thought might be noteworthy. He said that if you have a small exhaust leak in the manifold the exhaust can come up through the heat riser (and into the air cleaner) when the engine is still cold. HE said the exhaust can clog up the air filter quickly and cause the high HC and CO by making a coating that blocks a lot of the air flow.
All I know is I didn't have to replace the CAT again! (Thanks god) and the air pump seems to be doing it's thing even though I couldn't measure the flow.
Now, every 2 years, I'll have the ritual performed and I should be legal!
