try Napa for a reman, think they are under $100.......might be a better option.

I already have a reman one on my FJ60 now...this Smog pump came off a parts truck i had and so i thought about rebuilding just to have as a spare if i need one on the trails or traveling. I didn't know if i could rebuild it or if i had to send it away to get rebuilt. I would like to rebuild myself.

Ummm, tried that. Napa not *identical* reman'ed pump. Probably would work but pulley shaft was bent. When u buy, spin the pulley in the store and check for wobble.

Napa was ~ $125. Thru frustrations, went with SOR ~ $245. Their reman is actual OE reman'ed pump.

Well the spare smog pump isn't an OEM pump. should i even bother rebuilding it? When i removed the pump from the truck it had some oil in it (due to bad engine oil leak) so that's why i am thinking i need it rebuilt.

It may not be worth your time to rebuild, but keep it around to get you through if yours crators. One thing that's been mentioned is to keep the old pumps around and the best part to salvage is the graphite fan blade things - some of the remans use broken parts that don't put out enough volume to even pass some smog tests.

There was a thread here about it a few months ago - I think Jman started it. It would be nice if he'd chime in on this, because I think he knows about the pump pretty throughly, but he's generally too busy flirting with the boys over in chit-chat (:flipoff2: for Jamn :D) to post over here anymore...

What, still not over the hair dryer comment, Swank? :flipoff2:

My NAPA rebuild is doing fine after three months. My OEM that I was "looking to rebuild as a spare" is still sitting in my vise in the basement, waiting to be opened up, heh heh. I guess I got better things to do this summer than rebuild my spare smog pump.

Just search for "Swank60" and "bouffant" and I'm sure you'll find it. :flipoff2:

I think it was "Wiring the carb cooling fan" or something like that.

No, I was thinking of the thread that was more specific to this one, :princess:, where the smog pump chat was going on when yours locked up and you were trying to figure out how to get home (and if you'd have to put in a new pump - as I recall, you were worried about getting your flourecent muscle pants dirty... ;))

Oh, of course. Jman is just jealous of my luxurious hair :D

here's the only shot I have to Jman though:

Well, I'd rather take advantage of your good and helpful nature so that I could somehow spin the situation to make you look like my personal cabana boy :flipoff2:

(if this isn't the most off-topic, on topic thread I've ever been a part of, well then, I'm not the Greatest American Hero.)

*warm fuzzies*

FAWK FAWK FAWK FAWK FAWK!

Guess what started smoking the belt this morning?

You?

Those seem toxic. You should stick with tea leaves, banana peels - wait, you're in Jersey - add crack to that list, too...

That sucks though - did it lock up totally? Is your power steering pump leaking or something?

Mine decided it didn't want a pulley anymore yesterday afternoon.
Scared the living fawk out of me to see a large black object shoot out in front of my truck at ~70 MPH, followed by two small silver objects.
Luckily I was able to get off the freeway before my engine overheated (it took all the
belts off when it went).

Oddly, the pumpshaft still turns by hand with very little effort.

Oh, and did I mention this is the month I am due for smog check?
I think the Cruiser Gods are still punishing me for my last rig. Or all the Heeps I have
owned.

Wanna hear another good one ?

Well my smog pump locked up a while ago and I replaced it. It seems I didn't get enough practice the first time.

Well ... the smog pump hinge bolt didn't like being there and decided to exit through the front, it was a real 'pimp' too becuase it took the water pump belt and alt. belt with it. And gee ... luck ole' me, I get to practice again on installing the smog pump bolts and belts.

Check that bolt !

:+)

Funny thing is, I had just done a front amain about 2 weeks ago. Noticed the smog pump
hinge bolt had lost its nut and was rounded off by the belt. Bought a new nut/bolt, found
the old nut in the frame, tightened everything up and drove it for about 2 weeks.
Then, *BOOM!*
That bolt is still holding. :)
Of course, at one time, I had to shim the pulley, because it didn't line up with any of the
pulleys on the crank. This caused it to interfere with the P/S pump belt. Now I'm thinking
that I have a different problem than I originally thought. So I may have a perfectly good P/S
pump bracket for sale soon. Or trade for a smog pump. :D
