My problem is that I am hearing a whining noise periodically while driving. Can this be the Air pump? it seems to come and go...I can be driving down the road and everything is quiet then all of a sudden its starts this whining sound which is related to the RPM then after 10 min. then it goes away. Any help would be appreciated.
Could be the smog pump, when mine went it whirred like a turbo as I went through the gears. Put a stethoscope on it as you hit the throttle to find out for sure but be careful, it nearly blasted my eardrums when I put the stethoscope on mine.
another way to tell is to just take the big hose off the air cleaner that goes into it and put your ear to that. hell you might not have to put your ear to it. i didnt. i pulled that hose and the clacking was louder than s***

My guess would be the fan. There is a fan clutch that engages as the engine gets hot - it runs until the engine temp drops down a bit, then disengages. The fan is loud when it's running. Very loud.
I have had the same problem with my smog pump. It was a new unit professionally installed just before I bought my 60 off a friend but same deal, it whined randomly but would whine louder with higher rpm. Always started when going from a low gear going higher. I went back the shop where it was installed and the mechanic said it was a common problem with new smog pumps and would go away after a thousand miles or so after it "broke in" and it did. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing or if the unit is faulty but atleast the whinning has stopped!
