I went to try and get my FJ60 smogged today, but...

While trying to get the timing mark into view in the window, we were bumping the engine over a couple of times...we started it after we established where the correct mark was.

It had trouble starting and I found out why...there was smoke coming from the smog pump belt. The pump seemed to be seizing.

I'm wondering if maybe the belt wasn't tight enough and it was slipping as were were bumping it OR if the pump is now start to seize.

Can this happen? can the pump sieze a little before it totally goes out?

Oh, and yes, I did the search, but didn't see anything like this problem:)

Take the belt off the pump and see if you can turn it by hand. It should rotate with some slight resistance.

Swap it for the pump I gave you. ours was making all kinds of bad noise. swap it and take it back to the smog guy.

I'll do that...I'm glad the belt is still o.k. because I'm sure it's hell replacing it(maybe impossible?) without taking the radiator out.

I'll do that....thanks again for it...I'm sure it'll be WAY quieter.

Nah. You don't have to take the radiator out. You don't even have to remove the fan shroud. You do have to remove all the other belts, though. You will have to thread them through the fan clutch blades to get them off/on, but it's not too bad. If you haven't done it yet, you should think about it. Replace them all and keep your old ones in the truck for spares. You can store them out of the way under the rear seat or behind the rear quarter panels.

I replaced all belts and hoses when I did this intake/exhaust manifold gasket job.

I looked at it a little later and saw how indeed it can be done without removing all that stuff, but I might remove the radiator anyway;it's easy to do once you know how. This will allow me to replace the radiator with another used one I got from Manuchao(thanks Frank!) that's in way better condition.

Anyone know where to get these smog pumps rebuilt? I'd like to make this bad one good again as a trail spare.

I've had several smog pumps go south, all preded by sounds and then smoke. The culprit is often a leaking power steering pump. The bigger and more frequent the fluid bath the quicker the pump goes south.

I got mine rebuilt at a place called moto-parts exchange which is (was) located down by you. However, their website is no longer active. I think there was an update by someone else who called them and they said they couldn't get parts for the land cruiser air pumps any more...try doing a search inthe 60's forum.

You may want to look inside the ABV when you're replacing the smog pump.
Mine was making a weird noise and when I took it off and went to replace the old hose leading to the ABV (air bypass valve) I noticed a carbon vane sitting in there. Gary from Mudrak clued me into the fact that the vanes break off and get stuck in the ABV which forces the valve to stay open all the time and sends air downstream to the cat all the time rather than only at speeds over 45mph. The increased air flow burns up the cat!
Just something to look at once you're in there.

Sounds good...

I had found some rusty material when I replaced the the screws on top of the abv valve;I'll check again.

The only thing I anticipate having trouble with is removing those dried up smog pump hoses

Thanks, I'll do that then post for those that may want to get a s.p. rebuilt.

Yea..mine were like ceramic after 20+ years!
I had to cut mine and replace them. Actually I TRIED to cut them but they just shattered and crumbled . You might be able to see enough by taking the top off but I'm not sure.

Well, I got the old pump off and the new one on, but not fully mounted. The old pump had a lot of junk inside of it and the bearing looked okay, but there was just too much junk in there.

The old one was just that...old. Check out the pics. I cleaned off the used, but good condition smog pump. The old one looks like the P/S pump leaked on it a bit.

One thing for those that will tackle this job...it's not as hard as it seems. What makes it easier is to remove the bracket that is used for the tightening of the belt. It has two bolts holding it. Trust me, it makes it WAY easier.

Also, the long through bolt that the smog pump swivels on has a nut on the other side...there is also a metal sleeve that goes in the hole where the long through bolt goes through. I almost lost this metal sleeve.

Be careful not to lose it because if you do, the smog pump will move around and won't be secure.

If this doesn't make sense, it will when you do your pump.

More to come...

Btw, thanks Dynosoar and Manuchao...

What a difference! That old smog pump was toast.

The engine sounds so much quieter now. All I can hear is the possible valve adjustment I need to do.

Thanks again Dynosoar and Manuchao.

I'm going to take this puppy in for a smog check tomorrow. Wish me luck.;p
