Hi all,
Have a question regarding what a failing smog pump would sound like, or at least some of the symptoms (and reprocussions) of it failing. Been replacing a lot of the emission system on my '87 FJ60 (new VCV, all three VSVs, new vacuum hose). I had posted a bit ago about the timing being off, but after replacing all the valves and cleaning out and reinstalling the carb, the old boy is running like a champ but has started to make a wicked noise on occasion. Sounds at first like I left a bolt inside something and it's rattling around. Shakes up the entire engine and sounds like its coming from around the area of the smog pump. The noise is fairly random (not at any specific RPM or gear), just started doing it yesterday when I reinstalled the carb (yeah, I checked that I tightened everything and reconnected it all ;) ). Could it be the smog pump? Would love a little help, as even a rebuilt one (which would put the boy out of commision for who knows how long) is a good bit o' change.

Thanks!

Most common failure on a smog pump is for the bearing to seize. There are some early indicators of bearing failure (can't describe the sound) but eventually you'll hear a squeal...and it will get louder and louder...until it stops.

I assume that the guts of a smog pump could fail too, and that might be the source of your noises. There are some vanes inside that move air. Might try a "stethoscope" to home in on the noise. A rubber hose placed near your ear works pretty well.

With engine off, and been of for a while so you don't burn your hand: remove belt from smog pump: turn (spin) pump by hand & listen. If pump doesn't spin too freely, remove hoses from pump: repeat 'spin' test (it should! ) while listening.
Has your power steering pump/hoses leaked fluid onto smog pump ? that 'll kill 'em quick. scrunchy-scrapey noise as vanes disintegrate & metal vane trim binds in pump causing lock-up. BTDT, but no more - desmogged !

The power sterring line did leak a bit before I bought it, so could have very well gotten into the pump itself. I'll try that spin test and see if it spins okay. Thanks!
