I'm prepping my 60-series Landcruiser for a long roadtrip through Latin America.

My current project is to install a small locking storage box somewhere in the vehicle so that I can store my netbook, documentation and ideally camera bodies/lenses.

I plan to bolt it to the floor and close it with a padlock.

The largest item I need to fit is my netbook - 8.5" x 11.5" x 1"

I've looked around at commercial offerings and the lock boxes are either tailored for jeeps or they are just too small for my needs. I can't find a pelican case or an ammo can that is the right size.

The space I'm working with is 13" wide x 17" long x 10.5" tall. I could go taller but I'd have to reduce the length. For example, 13" wide x 15" long x 12" tall would also fit.

Any ideas or recommendations?

I want to keep this under $100 and I am happy to re-purpose something for this job ... if I could only find a lockable box that is the right size.

40mm ammo can;
Buy 40MM Ammo Can at Army Surplus World
Length 17.5 inches x Width 6 inches x Height 10 inches
You can find them cheaper than that place it was just the first result I found

Then weld/bolt a hasp so the hoop sticks out through the slot in the latch. You'll need to do two IIRC there is a latch on each end, just buy a matched set of padlocks.

Ammo cans are the way to go, IMO, but it's tough to find one that fits that gear. A square box rather than a tall rectangular one would be nice.

Nice :) I have a split bench so not much space between the seats for a console. I'm putting mine in the rear cargo area next to my wooden cargo box. I didn't really design that with security in mind - it's just there to keep my gear from flying around.

I've just about given up, however, since I don't want to build one custom (or pay for one to be built). Must not start another project ...

I'll probably just padlock a small gun case to one of my tie-downs and leave it at that.

Just remember that military gear in many parts of Latin America makes people nervous. The civies get nervous because only military people have gear like that and the military hasn't always been friendly to their own people. No military surplus stores exist say in Guatemala. Military people get nervous when they see civies have military spec gear because only the military is supposed to have it and you as a civie makes them question your motives, supply chain, etc. At the very least if you use an ammo can box, get rid of the olive drab paint with yellow lettering.

I will look into the lock box (not a pun) manufacturer of our narc boxes on the CCT ambulances, I've thought they would be the perfect dimensions for a pistol, etc., and wonder if they make larger ones.
