Ok guys ive searched and read and done my due diligence (i think?) But i cant seem to find any information on my issue. I tore down and rebuilt my SM465 early 10 spline transmission with no problems until the very end. I used a Novak master rebuild kit and was impressed with the quality. When i pressed on the input and output shaft bearings, i found the output shaft bearing seated against the thrust washer that contacts first gear. Thing is, first gear can move about .020-.030 fwd and aft, and the bearing along with it. both the input and output shaft bearings seem to be pressed completely on, and i double checked the assembly to make sure i didnt forget anything. heres a few pics of my question/problem(?) Any ideas? I emailed novak but havent heard back yet. Thanks in advance for info!

First, I must make it clear I'm not highly experienced with transmission work. That ring on the bearing allows the plate/adapter that goes on the back of the transmission to hold the bearing in place. I'm assuming the bearing is fully seated as far as it can go on the shaft since you say it is. When that shaft/bearing is pushed into the case where it belongs is the gear in the correct position with correct clearances? If so, I would think everything is good.

Yes youre right. I called Novak on my lunch today and they said said the same thing. It turns out that this transmission was Designed so that the tailshaft housing would sandwich the main shaft to trans housing. Im just relieved i dont have to go back into this thing, its so heavy. According to GM it weighs 180lbs all together.makes for Really awkward lifting. Thanks for the reply though Don, i appreciate it.

Ok so transmission installed, truck running(finally) everything wroks perfectly except the transmission makes a very loud whinr in 3rd and 4th, getting louder with speed. I thought back to this issue i had and am wondering if first gear is wearing on the housing.
Also, talking with Novak again, apparently there are 2 types of thrust washers that can install between first gear and the rear main brg, a flat one and a stepped one. Novak says the flat one can cause wear and clearance issues, and that the stepped one is the i should have for the advance adapters tcase adapter that mates to this sm465. Gonna have to take a look i there i guess

Going to pull tcase and tranny top cover this weekend and have a look. Its all ready to roll but this loud whine hurts my ears. Anyone else encounter this?

Attached a pic of the truck, close to the finish line!
