Slime... Who uses it?

Topo,

I'll be sure to ask about the Armadillo line, as well as slime (and others mentioned) when I go to a local Specialized bike shop(s).

I'm just getting ready to leave for work.
I've checked the tire pressure, but noticed that the treads are getting somewhat worn. I usually try to give me 30+ minuets than what it actually takes me, just in case I need to change a tube, but sure would be nice to not have to worry about it (as much, anyway).

I usually take a long way home just so I can ride out in BFE so it would be nice insurance not having to deal with it.

Thanks!!

Mot,

So what did you decide to go with??

I guess you haven't been around enough to know how (in)decisive I am. :hillbilly:

I'm afraid it's more "lazy" than indecisive at times!

Do you know of any online vendors that would ship international, as I have not seen any of these products in my hood. :hillbilly:

Hmmm... guess not. I'm still a youngin' here.:p But I will make a mental note that you are mostly decisive and ummm... have a tendency to procrastinate :D

As for a dealer I will let you know what I find. I spoke with a buddy at a bike shop that does quite a bit of online business and is checking to see if they ship international. He also looked for a Specialized dealer in Japan and said the closest Specialized dealer is in South Korea... so that would explain why you haven't seen any in your hood.

The worst case scenario would be to have someone ship them to my US headquarters in Utah (in-laws' place :hillbilly:) and have them ship them to me.

Or I guess I can try looking on e-ghey and see if anybody there might be willing to ship overseas.

Thanks for looking into it! :crybaby:

Hey Mot.

Search Chain Reaction Cycles

Search Chain Reaction Cycles

This is chain reaction. They are an international online bike and parts sales company based out of the UK I believe. They ship internationally and the link above should give you all of their Slime alternatives as its pretty hard to find outside the US.

Hope that helps.

Jon

Jon,

Thanks for the links!
It's probably because I'm such a retard, but I could not find the correct size of the tube there.

So I went to e-bay and found a place that would ship overseas, but would I need this inner tube protector or just need this tube? (I need the 700 28-32 size, I believe)

If the protector is just a gimmic or not worth the $ I would just buy maybe upto 4 tubes and be done with it. But if it's worth the $ then I'll but the protector as well.

Anyway, what do you know, I'm actually moving closer to worry-free cycling, thanks to you guys! :hillbilly:

Mot :)

With the self sealing slime tire I wouldn't run the liner. The liner does work, but its for protection of non self sealing tubes, think flak jacket on super man. It's already bullet proof, why try and add to it.

When I was running slime tubes in my mountain bikes I never needed a liner. Other than the time I ran over a giant nail I never really flatted out.

Best luck with your choices. Oh I checked the chain reaction site and the size you needed wasn't there. Only 700x35-45

Jon

Hey, thanks again, Jon!

I owe you one! :root::beer:

Mot :)

Mot,

The guys I know said they could ship the items, but no special rates for shipping as they do not typically ship intl. It looks like you have better options for the tubes and slime.

I agree with Jon on the flak jacket comment. Good luck, I hope the solution works well for you. If you still have problems with glass or other sharp objects keep the Armadillo line in mind, they're great tires.

Mike,

Thanks a bunch for getting back to me!

I'll try the UK guys/shop first and if they don't come through for some reason I just might bug (beg) you about it!! ;)

THANKS AGAIN!!

Mot :)

PricePoint.com

Mot,

Have you checked the PricePoint.com? I usually order 5 tubes pack $10 ($2 each, not the slime, but can't beat the price), and I know they ship internationally.

Good luck

Its all about the tire you use. Think logically, to puncture a tube you have to get through the tire. Also the precautions you make while you ride. I ride with gloves if I incidentally run through glass run your glove against your tire to clear it off before it can puncture through your tire to your tube. Personally I run slicks, the only reason tire companies put tread on road bike tires is to sell them there is no other reason. I have found that my slicks pick up a lot less debris. Just my experience. If you are looking for a tire that is going to help with the punctures, specialized makes a great puncture resistant tire called the armadillo.

If you are looking for bike shops online I have a few that I have bought from. Pricepoint, performance bike, treefort bikes, bonktown.com kinda cool it has deals one at a time through out the day, and if you want just google exactly what you click shopping and you will have a ton of s*** come up, thats what I did and have had great luck finding great deals

MOT

I never used Slime but I have used Stan's no Tubes or NoTubes.com - About Our Tubeless System

Great product...

No flats so far.....

I second that! Stan's was the greatest $55 I've spent on my Mtn Bike. For road bikes, to go tubeless you need to use the Stans compatible rims....check out Stan's website for more info on that.

I'm sure you won't be shocked, but I have not gotten any of these products yet.

What can I say... I'm both cheap and lazy!

Since starting this thread I've gotten maybe 2 flats, but I have not been riding much lately, partly due to the rainy season we're in. (It's raining as we speak!)

I thought about going tubeless (skinny road bike tire), but was kind of talked out of it by a local bike shop guy claiming that I would see little benefit from it since my tires are fairly skinny as it is/they are.

With that said, getting a flat was still on my mind when I went for a two-hour ride in the morning last week. So I know this is something that I eventyally will have to get to or I'll REALLY be kicking myself for not having done so (Same with better bicycle lighting!)

Thanks again for all of your input.
I'll have to give Stan a consideration, too!

Mot

So... it's been exactly six months since my last post and I'm here to tell you that I finally pulled the trigger on Slime.

I'm ordering from this place in the UK (e-bay) with 100% positive feedback. So hopefully I'll have them with me in a week or two and be able to have them see some action right away when my new work/commute starts.

Thanks again for all of your input and I'll be sure to report back with my experience with would-have-been punctures and flats!

Now if I can only afford a new lighting system...

Update

I received my order quicker than expected and have put them in with the new tires I picked up (700 x 28).

I've been commuting 10miles/one way during the week for the past two weeks and so far, so good! (Knock on wood!)

Oh, I've also inherited the clip-on's (Not sure what they're called) so riding has been more enjoyable. :)

What used to take me close to 50 min to work (Yeah, I suck! :flipoff2:) has been down to a consistent(sp) 40min!

If I didn't have Slime and had slick tires I could probably shave another 5min or something. :hillbilly:

But now I wish I would have bought a real road bike, instead of my cross bike.

I'll let you know if/when I get my flat or would've been flat though!

Hey Mot. Somehow when I think of cycling in Japan, the Keirin comes to the picture...:hhmm:

I've read somewhere on here that these bikes fetch some $$$, but have never looked into it.

Besides being light/fast, I just don't get the why people are interested in them, especially the no gear thingy...

And it would be unpractical, at least for me, because my commute consists of some hills and I would never want to look like a sissy pushing my bike up any hill!!!

Oh, while on the subject of not getting thingies...

I don't get why some people are riding slowly and the second you pass them they start riding like they're Floyd Landis on steroids trying to pass you(me)... I'm talking about while commuting and not in a race.

What would you do when that happens???

You start pedaling like mad, like Lance Armstrong going after women half his age, right? :D

LOSERS!!! :flipoff2:
